Shared on Fri, 02/15/2008 - 09:34Well, I don't have anything really relating to lives.
Quite the V-day last night. I got done working out, and then spent almost an hour waiting to pick up our dinner at Chili's (holy shit it was packed!).
Got home, and we ate our dinner as a family, watched TV, had the little one do her homework, and then the wife took her to bed to read books.
I hop on to play some COD with the CG crew... 15 minutes later, the wife comes rushing out with the little one with her shirt off, freaking out.
Then I see why. The little one has broken out in Hives on both of her shoulders... Both shoulders are bright red, and then right in front of my eyes, her face starts to break out. And her face starts to look really bad... like one big Hive as all of the converge together.
She's so scared, that she's literally shaking from fear. I'm concerned, but not overly so. I grab the liquid Benadryl, and give her the recommended dose. I want to give more, but I call my doctor (or the on-call doc).
While we're waiting for him to call, I find some Benadryl cream and rub it on all of her affected areas.
She's really scared, and then tells us why.
We had just watched The Game Plan last weekend. In the movie, the little girl has a severe allergic reaction to some nuts (I think) and had to be hospitalized as she couldn't breath.
The little one remembered this and was scared shitless that the same thing was happening to her.
I had to explain to her about the differences between a reaction causing anaphylactic shock and one that starts out slowly with just hives. Also the fact that we had Benadryl on hand helped.
Doc calls back and gives the ok to give her another half-dose of Benadryl, and just to monitor her breathing for the next few hours. If her breathing starts to get labored, we'll have to go to the ER immediately, but otherwise, just watch her and bring her in in the morning.
So, the little one is passed out now from the Benadryl and we lay on the couch with her and I catch up on my Lost episodes. We stay up until midnight, and figure out that she'll be ok, as the hives have pretty much disappeared, and her breathing is fine.
I hate the ER. Been there too many times for the wife and little one. I hate having to wait there. I hate having to be there for an average of 6 hours per visit.
I'm glad we didn't have to go, primarily for her, but also cause I just hate going there.
So, another holiday spent in an exciting way not anticipated.
:)
