Doctors, Nurses, and Tests Oh MY!

Well we have a busy, frantic few days.  I got an email at work from the school nurse at around 9am stating that haley was complaining of chest pain and holding her stomach.  When I got there to pick her up they suggested that she might have kidney stones.  She didn't want to go into the ER so I told her we would go to her granny's hospital.  (Matt's mom is an RN up at Baylor Grapevine).  So we drove to baylor, fully prepared to be there awhile.  I brought some childrens computer games, my laptop, and my MP3 player.  We were seen almost imeediately and the doctor cam in and examined her.  They did an IV, took some blood and a urine sample.  When the tests results came back he stated that he was 90% sure that it was appendicitis.  The soonest they could get her into surgery would be about 4 pm.  It was around 12:30 at this point.  So I emailed all the family and told them what was going on.  The came back about 30 minutes later and said that he spoke to the on call surgeon and he was not comfortable operating on anyone under the age of 9, so we were transported by ambulance to Children's in downtown Dallas.  When we got there about 2:00 pm the nurse that was there when we got off the ambulance was less than friendly.  She was almost hateful and wanted to know where the tests were that Baylor had done.  Like results from a sonogram, xray, cat scan etc...I told her that they didn't do any of those.  Anyway, they began running tests and everything they did was inconclusive.  They still had high suspicions but not enough to warrant taking her under the knife.  We were finally released at around 10 pm and told to watch her for the next 24-48 hours.  So we came home and she slept with us. 

The next day we had a birthday party to go to at chuckie cheese's around 2pm and so we thought we would go to mcdobnalds for ice cream first to kill some time...she was complaining of a really bad headache, and just laid down in the booth.  She didn't even wasnt ice cream, or anything else for that matter.  When we left I gave her some childrens chewable tylonel and she almost vomited.  We got to chuckie cheese's and she felt a little better for like 45 minutes.  When we got home around 4pm she vomited.  She laid down in our bed and went to sleep.  I said that I was going to take her back and Matt said no that the vomiting was a reaction to him jostleing her around when he carried her inside.  So I let it ride.  My son and I went to the grocery store and we came back about two hours later.  There had been no change but she hadn't vomited anymore.  I was getting ready to blog here when I heard her gagging in our room.  I went in there and she was vomiting again.  So I had Matt pick her up and take her to the car and off to Dallas we went again.  When we arrived there was, I am not kidding, 50-75 children in the waiting room.  Add about 2 parants per child and you understand there was standing room only.  We say the registration nurse who after I explained everything put her at acute and we saw triage almost immediately. 

The triage nurse put her as higher priority and we only had to wait like 15 minutes before we were taken back.  He said the average wait for the others was 5 hours, so we were lucky.  They ran more tests and checked for bladder infections, any kind of bacteria infection..nothing.  No fever, no diareaha.  Finally about 5 am they ordered the CT Scan and she had to drink this contrast fluid, they took forever to get down.  We did the CT Scan about 8 am, and had the results shortly.  It was positive that she did NOT have appendicitis.  However that was all the informaion they could give me.  She doesn't have a virus, or an infection..so they called it unexplained vomiting sent us home with a perscription for nausea..we got home around 10 am...so that has been the last few days. I hope that everyones has had a better weekend than us!  We were goingt o see Shrek 3 this weekend so I am really bummed that my daughter didn't feel up to it...
