Star Trek The Video Game Review

I'm about 2-3 hours into playing Star Trek the Video Game with my good friend BillyBob8.   I'm always looking for a good Star Trek game and have found very few really goods ones since the days of Voyager Elite Force and Bridge Commander.

First the Good.

yes Impressive CO-OP abilities.   Me and my gamer bud started a co-op campaign at my home using split screen.   We both saved our games to the cloud.  A couple days later, we attempted to resume the co-op game from two different locations (his home and my home).  I had my doubts as to whether or not it would work or more likely make us start again.  It worked like a charm.  No problems.   That ability gets an A+ in my gradebook.

yes Mass Effect Influence.   Can definately sense the influence of Mass Effect on this 3rd person shooter game and that's a good thing.  Love the tricorder and it's abilities.

yes Low Cursing and bad language.  Just as a star trek game should be.

yes The Gorn:  These are not your old fashioned gorn.   They remind me of the lizard people from the remake of  V - the series.   Over 15 different classes of Gorn in the game.

yes Some humor in the game and some laughable moments regarding some of Kirks' comments and actions (especially towards female characters.)

yes The closest game yet, I've seen to actually immersing the player into an actual Star Trek storyline and episode.

Now the Bad.

no The game seems little glitchy.   At one point in our game, our mission had three objectives (1 each at a different location) to complete within a specific amount of time.   After failing once and trying the level again from the checkpoint, the game no longer displayed the countdown timer or the locations of the objetives.

no Today, in a single player game with an AI as Mr. Spock.   The AI completely froze while climbing down a ladder and would not reactivate no matter how much I called to him,  ordered him to move to a location  or shot him with my phaser.   Had to restart the entire level.   That's dissapointing.

noSometimes activating an item (such as unlocking a hatch or hacking a computer) requires you to stand on EXACTLY the spot the progammer wanted to you too.  You can run all around the object and if you don't stop on exactly the spot, you will not get to interact with the object,  This can slow you down and adds a level of frustration to the game

So in summary:
Would I buy it again?    Yes
Do I think it is the best Star Trek game?   Probably - Definately the most immersive to date.
Is it as good as Mass Effect 3?    No
Bottom Line:  If you like Star Trek - you will probably enjoy the game as long as you don't expect it to be as robust of a game as Halo 4 or Mass Effect 3 or Call of Duty Black Ops 2.

My rating so far:  3 out of 5 stars.   111
