Pwnathon2o2p
Shared on Wed, 05/06/2009 - 12:39Last blog, I left off in early 2008 with the 2old2playHalo clan wanting to do a fundraiser in honor of a former clan member for PKDcure.org. They didn't have any idea about how well it would be received, what to do, who to include or what to call it.
Well, first things first. The event needed a name. It was a gaming fundraiser. “PWN” is a word that was basically created by gamers. Everyone in gaming knows what it means and sees or hears it daily. As an older gamer, when thinking about fundraisers, the old Phone-a-thons came to mine. Hey, Pwn ~ Phone… that’s close! We’ll call it the Pwnathon! And now, perhaps an apology is in order to a certain clan. We really didn’t think about how a 2o2p Pwnathon would be confused with the 2old2pwn clan. We hope it isn’t causing any inconvenience on their end.
Anyway, the Pwnathon was born. Now the event needed a goal. The 2o2pH clan just had a fundraiser a few months before so it was assumed that most of the donations would come from other 2o2p’ers. We had no idea if anyone would pay attention to us at all, much less actually give us money. We decided to challenge 2old2play to raise the amount that the clan had raised with the GLAD360 event: $500.
Looking back, that time could be compared to running towards a cliff with a new hang glider. You build up as much speed as you can, and you’re pretty sure you’re going to take off, but you don’t really know what’s going to happen until you take that last leap. For a month, we talked about what events to have and started blogging and posting advertisements. Then, on June 7, 2008 we leapt. The 2old2playHalo Pwnathon 2008 was live.
