new stuff about me

It prolly isn't well-known, but I belong to the Press and Writer's guild here on the site.  Oh, are we a guild?  Well, it sounds good.  It is a secret society that strives to make our front page more interesting, among other things.  There's actually a lot more to it, and we all have our jobs to do, but, until now, I have been an editor.  Sounds cool....editor.  Some of the things you see on the front page have been edited by me, some not.  But, I am trying to spread my wings a little, and try my hand at actually writing an article.  Oh, it's still a secret, and needs lots of work.  But I have had some contructive criticism on it by someone I trust, and onward I go.  It's scarey being "published".  I am very used to it now, but when I first started blogging, OMG!  I wasn't sure what I should do.  Well, just being myself seemed to work the best.

So, what are my qualifications?  Just to be willing to contribute is the biggest one!  But, yes!  I can spell.  I know punctuation and grammar.  I was taught phonics, not sight reading.  And I am the product of a Catholic school, taught by nuns, and my education was spectacular!  Well, not the Catechism stuff.  And going to Mass every day of my life.  But English, taught in the "old" way was extremely important.  We had to memorize things like "I before E except after C" and, well, now I forget them.  Penmanship was important, too.  I have lousy penmanship, and was made to practice, practice, practice.  One of the things I remember writing over and over is "The hurrier I go, the behinder I get".  And another, "Better late than never, but better never late".  I guess while the nuns were unsuccessfully trying to get me to write beautifully, they were also giving me lessons in life.  The lessons in life, I learned, the writing still looks like chicken scratches.

Yes, Bubba, I will rewrite the article.  I will put more of myself into it, instead of, just the facts, ma'am.  Who wants facts, anyways?  They say write about things you know about.  I know about this, and I can do it!

I'm not a writing pro by any means. In my opinion, the grammar, spelling, and punctuation are all just polish. The real devil of writing well is getting the reader to read the next word and not go off to do something more interesting. And part of that is "your voice." If you're interested in an expert's opinion, check out "On Writing Well" by William Zinsser. It's a great book on writing and talks about how a writer can typically trash their first 3 paragraphs because that is the minimum time it takes to "fall into your voice" after trying to hard to have a good opener. Keep up the good work!
