Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban
The Ban Expired in 2004 During the Bush Administration.

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum." Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S.

Mexican government officials have complained that the availability of sophisticated guns from the United States have emboldened drug traffickers to fight over access routes into the U.S.

A State Department travel warning issued Feb. 20, 2009, reflected government concerns about the violence.

"Some recent Mexican army and police confrontations with drug cartels have resembled small-unit combat, with cartels employing automatic weapons and grenades," the warning said. "Large firefights have taken place in many towns and cities across Mexico, but most recently in northern Mexico, including Tijuana, Chihuahua City and Ciudad Juarez."

At the news conference today, Holder described his discussions with his Mexican counterpart about the recent spike in violence.

"I met yesterday with Attorney General Medina Mora of Mexico, and we discussed the unprecedented levels of violence his country is facing because of their enforcement efforts," he said.

Holder declined to offer any time frame for the reimplementation of the assault weapons ban, however.

"It's something, as I said, that the president talked about during the campaign," he said. "There are obviously a number of things that are –– that have been taking up a substantial amount of his time, and so, I'm not sure exactly what the sequencing will be."
In a brief interview with ABC News, Wayne LaPierre, president of the National Rifle Association, said, "I think there are a lot of Democrats on Capitol Hill cringing at Eric Holder's comments right now."

During his confirmation hearing, Holder told the Senate Judiciary Committee about other gun control measures the Obama administration may consider.

"I think closing the gun show loophole, the banning of cop-killer bullets and I also think that making the assault weapons ban permanent, would be something that would be permitted under Heller," Holder said, referring to the Supreme Court ruling in Washington, D.C. v. Heller, which asserted the Second Amendment as an individual's right to own a weapon.

The Assault Weapons Ban signed into law by President Clinton in 1994 banned 19 types of semi-automatic military-style guns and ammunition clips with more than 10 rounds.

"A semi-automatic is a quintessential self-defense firearm owned by American citizens in this country," LaPierre said. "I think it is clearly covered under Heller and it's clearly, I think, protected by the Constitution."

"automatic weapons and grenades," This is such a joke. They act like buying an automatic weapon is easy. A legal purchase is not. And last I checked, Walmart wasn't stocking grenades. He really thinks that wealthy drug cartels need to steal guns from houses in the U.S.? What a crock.

no shit grenades, damn i must not be looking close enough to the shelves in wally world. and full autos, this is complete and utter B.S. maybe the grenades and full autos are coming from the defecting mexican military, duh. the other thingf that pisses me off is when certain people especially on cops and other type shows that show arrests, is when they come across an ak or ar15 or sks or whatever, they ASSUME its a full automatic weopon. and its bullshit. about 97% of all of those weapons are semi-auto, not full, but they just like to say full auto cause it sounds scary!!!!! Fuck Obama and Fuck Holder and Fuck anyone who wants a gun ban!!

If you let them have that, it is only a matter of time before they go after other guns. I for one will be stocking up.

+1 Das... I doubt seriously that they're purchasing them from American local firearms shops either. If anything those automatic weapons being used against the Mexican Police are crossing our border illegally and into the hands of criminals in the US, providing an even greater argument for unrestricted private ownership of military grade hardware. As an RKBA advocate it is my belief that a law abiding citizen has the Constitutional right to own any firearm they so chose for whatever reason they so choose. Of course that may just be me.

Also... I read somewhere that they wanted to classify semiautomatic pistols as assault weapons. Fucking madness I tell you. Remember, God created all men equal, John Moses Browning made some more equal than others.

Gosh darn it! And after they take the guns they will take our knives, too! And then our forks! We will be left with spoons as our only cutlery and be forced to eat nothing but cream-based French soups for sustenance! I'm filling up my bunker right now! It never fails to make me shake my head when contemplating why right-leaning people are so protective of the 2nd amendment while while usually so dismissive of the other nine in the Bill of Rights. If a new AWB passes and it's structured anything like the impotent Clinton-era bill, it will be filled with so many loopholes you'll be able to drive a stake-bed truck filled with cheap, plastic, eastern European semi-autos right through it. You'll still be able to get AR's, just as you can get full autos today, by getting an FFL. With regard to reduced sized handgun clips, personally I don't like the idea. But then again, I'm personally of the opinion that if you can't kill what you're shooting at with ten bullets, you need more skill, not more bullets.

I'm sure there was always the same problem in Mexico, just they're making a big deal of it now to convince the Kool-Aid drinkers and sheeple that an AWB will make not only the US a safer place, but Mexico too. Are their heads so far up their asses that they don't realize it's not the law abiding citizens who are smuggling guns south of the border to sell to drug cartels!? It's the criminals doing that. And like MineMagnet said, it's probably those drug cartels smuggling those weapons into this country. Do people actually think that this will be a safer country with less crime if the only non-gov'mint people with guns are criminals? That'd be like giving them a free pass to do whatever they want knowing there would be no resistance. If they succeed in passing a permanent AWB, they will go after the rest of the firearms after that. Then they'll go after knives, other things deemed weapons...freedom of speech...freedom of religion...until we're just a nation of slaves working for the greater good with an equal distribution of wealth. Kind of sounds like Socialism doesn't it? But what do I know, I'm just a +25er who likes to play video games.

semi auto is deadlier than full auto. it is in using logic that the ban breaks down. Full auto, in the army, is used for suppressing, covering fire. A trained soldier or marine will use semi auto or a two or three shot burst to actually kill someone. This is where I break with the President, and my wife. I am looking into getting an AR to keep my skills sharp. I suppose I had better get one soon. Holder's not a communist. That's silly.
