Shared on Thu, 12/06/2007 - 09:26So last night I settled down to play some games and have a couple beers after a tough day at work. I am at the same point on both Guitar Hero and Rock Band--second to last set on 'hard'.
The first problem is that I thought, 'I need to put in some time on GH and see if I can progress, then I can put in Rock Band and have some fun'. What a great attitude right? F-ing GH3 is work, RB is fun. That is the way I view it. I do realize they are vastly different in difficulty--I am at the cap of my skills right now in GH3 but still progressing fairly smoothly in RB. But it's not just difficulty. I think it also has to do with the songs. With GH I am trying to beat the Disturbed and Muse tunes. Two very unfun songs, I get no enjoyment or Rock Star feeling personally from these songs. When I switch to RB I'm playing Boston and Blue Oyster Cult. The songs are just more fun.
Another problem is this: for some reason with Rock Band, I feel like they WANT me to succeed. It's a lot more forgiving. And I'm not just talking about on hard--I've played expert too, and it's funner to play than GH3 on hard. Seriously I feel like Rock Star's attitude is, we want you to have fun and feel like you are a rock star. GH's attitude is, we want to prove that we are f-ing cooler than you are. You want to beat a song? Put in 50 hours of practice. Some of the note and chord progressions on GH are just ridiculously stupid, and you lose fairly quickly and easily. In RB I feel like I can miss the tougher licks and still succeed. After playing GH I was flushed, angry and disappointed. After RB I felt awesome.
Basically, it seems like GH is geared toward 'you have to be one hell of a good guitarist just to beat a song', while Rock Band feels more like 'you can beat songs more easily but you need to work harder for perfection'. If that makes any sense.
At any rate if they come out with the next installments at the same time I'll be buying RB and not GH3. These opinions are of course just opinions. I know there are people out there much better at GH, maybe they think it's more fun. For me personally, it isn't.
I have been seeing some buzz about RB forcing higher difficulties on the world tour. This is a concern but really the learning curve on that game is far more manageable than the GH curve. I finally got my girlfriend to try these games with me last weekend when we both got drunk. She tried out rockband on easy, she loved it. Later in the night I put in GH just for some different songs and we could barely finish. It actually ended the night of gaming on a bad note. At least with rockband novices can put it in and get through some damn songs right off the bat.
