Concerning the Wii

After letting the name on Nintendos new console digest in my head for a day, I have decided that I am indifferent to the name. Indifferent as in I dont dislike the name and I dont think it is a great name. I like the concept of what they are trying to do with the console and I think Wii integrates nicely into that concept. For years, Nintendo has stated vehemently that there is no demand for online multiplayer games. And with Wii, they have not only acquiesced that there is a demand but they have attempted to promote their new consoles online multiplayer function in the consoles name. This is a huge step in the right direction for Nintendo. In addition, the bright colors and simple concepts from the past names and logos are gone. The purple lunchbox console looked silly amongst the rest of equipment in peoples entertainment centers. Nintendo does not have to aggressively market their console to kids today because everyone already know that they produce the best games for children. Thus, they can upscale their image to appeal to the older gamer without fear of losing market share in their key demographic.

Furthermore, it is not like Microsofts next-gen console has a better name. The 360 is neither round nor does it rotate. Nothing about the console has anything to do with the name, except for maybe the green ring that circles around the power button. The cool thing about the name of the 360 is that it was more than likely chosen because of how it sounds compared to Sonys PS3. If they had named the console Xbox2, then the Xbox2 would have sat on the same shelf as the PS3. A consumer who is unfamiliar with either console could think they are similar machines, but the Sony console has a 3 in it so it must be newer or better or quite possibly, if the consumer was really ignorant, a sequel to the Xbox2. So Microsoft developed a console name that included the number 3 in it so that they would be on par with Sony on a name basis. One might say they even upped the ante by making the name 360 which is an even higher number than just 3.

One thing is certain, marketing gurus think about trivial minutiae way too much. Why cant we just have a console that gives us intelligent television? Intelli-vision. Hey, thats a great name for a console!
