Shared on Sat, 10/27/2007 - 11:09It's my first try at anything like this.
It seems to me that most folks blog as a form of therapy. It's a nice, nearly anonymous way to unload a lot of the baggage we gather in our day to day lives. Is the boss acting like a shit? Blog about it. Is the wife driving you crazy? Blog it. (And just hope that neither of them ever read it!)
I have been working in Radio for the past 18 years. I started in College, and was hired full time at a small station in southeast Ohio. To keep it short, I love my job. For 10 years, I did the morning show and a twice-weekly interview show. I also take care of the station's billing and traffic software, automation software and data and audio networks. For a person like me, it's been great! There was something new every day, and I had my hand in everything.
I am mixing my tenses because the radio job is coming to an end. My wife has hated living here, and the decision to move to NE Ohio has been made. My family is already there, and I will follow when our house sells (yeah.... good time for THAT!) and I find a decent job. My boss has been very supportive. I have moved out of my on-air job and am continuing to work in a purely technical capacity. I have made some tentative inquiries into the Cleveland area radio market. Most of the stations are owned by the big corporations. Music, talk and pretty much everything are tested and focus-grouped into oblivion! Therefore, I am thinking about a career change.
Much of my work has been in a technical capacity, with a focus on computer hardware, so I am thinking of trying a job in the computer world. The interviews I have attended so far have been very positive, and my experience is valuable..... it's just not quantified. I need to scrape together the cash for an A+ certification, but supporting two separate households leaves very little extra capital on hand.
So, for now, the long, sad goodbye continues at my current job and the search for new employ continues. Lotsa fun! If anyone knows of a decent radio or technical shop in the Cleveland area, let me know!
