A little late, I know. Got busy with another video for church. Anyhoo, let's move on.

This week, I highlight Police Quest 1. Please note this is the original version, and not the VGA remake that most people can only remember these days.

The one thing about this era of games is that there was a variety of stories, even if their core was the same. Walk around. Look at things. Type things. Pickup things. So on and so forth. Police Quest brought something new to this mix.....driving :) More on that later.

You played a typical cop in a typical city. You have to perform typical cop tasks....exciting and mundane. This includes make sure your tires are good before driving off. This includes taking notes in your notebook. Turning in your firearms at the end of the day. It definitely was an exercise in thoroughness. But, as an 8 yr old, it was a kid's dream. It made me want to be a cop. Even though, in my youth, I had no idea what a hooker was, and why she says my mother "wore combat boots". It was confusing for my age :) Still, such a good game and the one that paved the way for more and more realistic police stories.

back to the driving. Quite possibly the most annoying part of the game, but a skill that could be easily developed.  You moved a small square car (much like the game of life) across the map, having to obey traffic laws and the use of your siren as well. If you saw somebody breaking the law, you had to chase them down.

It proved to be a very interesting. out of the entire series, I don't hold it in as high a regard as Police Quest 3. But i'll highlight that another day. :)

Here's to you Police Quest 1, for making me want to be a cop and ruining my innocence without me realizing it.
