Funky bookends to my 20's

In just over two months I will be 30 years old. As a number of my friends are hitting this milestone as well, we are all discussing where we are all in life, and what we need to accomplish before the big day. Me, I can't complain - since my 20th birthday I graduated college, found a career, got married, bought a house, and had a kid. There was a lot of other stuff in there as well but that's the bulk of it.

I also remember exactly what I was doing at midnight on my 20th birthday:

About 45 minutes before midnight a friend and I were walking around the grounds of Woodstock 99, set to kick off the next day, and saw something happening at an indoor stage. Parliament Funkadelic was performing a surprise concert in front of a small crowd of a few hundred people, as it was George Clinton's birthday. Hung out for the show into the morning hours - and at midnight on the morning I turned 20 years old, I was crowdsurfing to "We Want the Funk".

Despite the huge bands I saw in the next couple of days and the stories and battle scars I left with, the smaller, more intimate performance by P-Funk was my highlight of Woodstock 99. So this morning I did some research and found that the band is still touring and, the day before my birthday, they are playing a show in Englewood, New Jersey, just over an hour from my parents' house. I'm not sure I want to blow a ton of cash on the "good" seats (at $90 per seat!!) but there are seats available under $50. The show starts at 8 and there is no guarantee that they will still be playing at midnight but who cares?

So that's the preliminary plan. I am still going to look at a couple options and have to be rational - it's a weeknight, my wife doesn't have any vacation days, and of course I have to make arrangements for my kid if I'm staying with my parents for the night. But the more I think about it the more excited I get, except for one thing:

I'm going to be 30 in just a couple months.

P-funk rocks live don't they. I saw them here in nashville at a small club a few years back & they played for 4 hours straight. No breaks between songs even. It was just like a big 4 hour jam.

"It was just like a big 4 hour jam." That's exactly what I remember about the Woodstock show. They started playing one song and it felt like it never ended - it must have lasted at least 20+ minutes of them just jamming and solo'ing back and forth. Absolutely amazing.

30 is great. You’ve finally reached adulthood. No need to sweat it. You should do the PFunk show. That will be another one of those experiences you talk about when you become an old fart a long time from now. One day you’ll be like your GPa telling tales of WWII or your parents talking about jitterbugging, except much funkier.
