Blogging is tough. It has been noted (sometimes rather snarkily) that the women tend to have the most blog reads. There are two schools of thought as to why. The first is that we are women. Guys like to follow us cause we are chicks. The implication is that guys like women because... we are cute women (duh!). I have rarely posted any pictures of myself, so no one knows if I am a cute blonde, or if I am a hag... or hell... if I am a guy even. So, I am not sure if that exactly holds water with some of the women's blogs. Yes, other ladies have posted pictures of themselves, and yes, their blog hits skyrocket.
But I believe that the women's blogs are popular because they are personal. We rarely post plain old funny youtube videos, or about music, or about our sports teams, or even about gaming. We post about our lives. This is what Erica is doing. This is a picture of the new aquarium. This is a picture of my kids riding bikes and getting diry. This is how I feel about clans. I am going through a separation. I am having trouble at work. I bought a new house and I am getting married. I went to the store and bought tampax (see... we do snark and humour too) . Some of it is silly, some of it painful, but much of it is intensely personal stuff, but this is stuff that people seem to enjoy.
But there are so many downsides to this. The main one is the nastiness that people will throw at a person. Share too much about your sex life (meow) and wow! watch both the nasty, humourous comments and the blog hits just roll. Share about your job, and people feel as though they can judge. And comment. And generally be a jackass about it. Also, if you share too much you can't take it back. People will judge because you have allowed them to.
I am of two minds. Yes, it's free speech. You put yourself out there, and you must be prepared to reap the consequences. People are assholes. People will want to "teach others a lesson." because they obviously know more than the person living the life. Sadly, women deal with this type of paternalistic bullshit all the time. People are petty, and spiteful to both men and women. Some people place more burden on others, while other people lift that burden. Most of 202p is the latter, but we sadly, have our fair share of the former.
I have been guilty of a bit of snark. I admit it. There it is. I take nothing back. If you share of yourself, you must be prepared for the truth. And the truth is that sometimes the truth hurts. And the truth is that there are nasty, jealous people who will pull you down without empathy for no reason. Should they get the banhammer? Fuck them in the mouth. They are not worth considering.
But the other part is this: we are supposed to be a community. We are supposed to live together. Perhaps snark and nastiness is warranted sometimes, but before you hit that "post" button, ask yourself if you would say these things to someoen in real life. If the answer is no, then don't post it.
*************
Now: watch me not take my own adivce and post personal crap. Still have vertigo. Took blood test. I have been told to wait a week. Probably low iron, lowish (but still normal) blood pressure. Who knows.
