I've been pondering this for a week now, but ever since I started playing this game something in the FF has just been off. I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was. There's plenty of force, and I can feels bumps and things in the road but it just felt like there was a disconnect there. Almost as if the FF that was being relayed to the wheel didn't match what was happening on screen.
I've also been experiencing problems with the wheel not relaying the feedback needed when reaching (or exceeding) the limits of the car. There is not sensation coming through that gives any indication that you are about lose traction and go into a spin. After exhausting all options in the settings (both in game and on the wheel), I think I've finally put my finger on what is missing from the FF effects, and it boils down to two things.
1. The car doesn't settle into the road. Allow me to explain. On any given road (or track) there are environmental influences that gently guide your car in the direction the road wants you to go. Whether it is a groove worn into the road from continuous traffic or the angle of the road itself these things have a huge effect on how your car handles. This is non-existent in GT5 (I'm not saying the physics aren't taking these things into consideration, just that it is not relayed properly through the wheel). There is no gentle push, and any bumps orjolts appear to be random artifical forces thrown in to make it a bumpier ride rather than a true representation of the road (with the exception of going off track or hitting a wall, the effects work fine on these).
Another example of this is when exiting a turn, in a car you can simply allow the car to straighten itself out as you gradually apply thethrottle. This just doesn't happen properly in this game.
2. The second big issue is no slip angle. It just isn't there. The only clues you have when reaching the limits of grip are visual and audible. This is may not seem like a big issue to someone who's never played a game that had this effect on a wheel, but once you've been using it and it is gone you feel like someone has turned off your wheel.
EDIT: reading that back I realized it sounded really negative, but I really like the game. The graphics are awesome and I can't wait to play some 2old4forza folks online. These are just some of the things that I find lacking compared to Forza.
Now for the butkicker pics I promised Stinky. I mounted a 15/16 inch socket to my Playseat:
Then I just attached the Buttkicker Gamer2 to it:
Pretty easy install, took 5 minutes and $10 worth of stuff from my local hardware store.
Here's an updated shot of the complete setup (minus the PS3):
I also added an HDMI splitter to one my main xbox, and the signal is now being split to the TV that is wall mounted in front of my treadmill, in this pic you ca see the same image on my center screen and the one on the wall:
The TV was already hooked up to a cable line, but now it can be used to watch DVDs or I can play some Rock Band on it. Here's a close up of it:
The wall mount swivels to it can easily be turned to face the treadmill, but this angle works best for Rock Band or if I want to put something on for my son to watch. Still need to do some wire management on this one, but since we are getting new floors an repainting the house soon I haven't bothered doing that yet.
