Hobby #743

I have decided to try yet another hobby. Ask my wife, I am famous for trying new hobbies. I have been trying to learn to play the guitar and I stumbled upon cigar box guitars.

I decided I could do that so the adventure began. I don't really have any big power tools so it has been a little harder until today. I found a belt sander on craigslist near where I work so picked it up today.

This should speed up the process quite a bit. Here are a few pics of what I have so far. You can make electric versions for under $10. I will share more pics when I get finished.

Scarf joint on the neck was done by hand so it is a little rough but I am learning.

Holy shit this is amazing!  Post more of this.  Don't listen to lala, he wishes he could make this kinda stuff.  Instead he's stuck being terrible at video games.

Nice! I build my first CBG last summer!  It's a great hobby - I've started building a couple more and hope to finish them up in the next month or so!  Here is my first - I friggn love it!  you have nice equipment than me lol I used hand tools and a dremel.  I need some machines!   if you wanna talk shop or have any questions that only someone with 1 build under their belt could answer (lol) let me know.  Good luck! looks great!

Very cool BM. I will be picking your brain for sure as questions arise.

actually I have a question for you! lol Does your neck go right through the body to the end or did you make some kind of neck block / joint at where the neck meets the body?

It was suppose to go all the way through but I messed up cutting away the part that goes under the lid so that it will shut properly. I ended up cutting it off flush with the end(bottom) of the box. I built a shim to go under it to support it and then I will screw it down good. So yes, it does go all the way through the box. It just doesn't exit the bottom like I had planned. Have you checked out the website Cigar Box Nation? Lots of great info and pictures. I am Tnfishdaddy on there.

As far as tools go, I don't have much. The sander I bought yesterday is going to help a lot. I borrowed a band saw from a guy that I work with but I keep using my hand held jig saw more. I wish I had a table saw for the scarf joints so I could build my necks a little cleaner. I am trying to borrow a router now so that I can round off the back of my necks.

ahhh! yes so many things learned by making a mistake and having to compensate - I expect every one I build will have some of that "creative necessity" in it (mine had a ton of those moments haha).  Yes I am a member of CBN (I am FretMonkey on there I will add you as a friend) that is what I made that boring video for explaining my mistakes (learning opportunities :) ).  I love that site.

I totally want to leave work and go work on my guitars now :)

The most useful tool for me has been my dremel I used that thing all over the place - cutting the head off the bolt that I used for a nut, cutting the soundholes, shaping wood, sanding in little corners, rounding edges.  I didn't start with the dremel - I was using all hand tools but then when I picked up the dremel things really started moving along.  I wish my son would finish his guitar - we started at the same time but he just kind of stopped.....maybe this summer he'll finish it up.

I would love to see some of the stuff you have made. Been thinking about making some sort of drum that could be played with my feet while playing the guitar.

I made a zero skill drum to play with my guitar.  Just a big old suitcase and a kick drum with some supports ala Hollowbelly.  I'd also love to see some of your instruments!  2old2Luthier!
