First off, I'm a little bumbed. The filter on my computer at work started picking up 2old2play and now it's blocked. That's why the beer blog is a day late. I was too depressed yesterday to blog so I just killed some brain cells and killed some peeps on R6V. Oh well, I guees less will have to due. First, here are the beers I drank last week and then some beer news. By the way, in case some of you may be wondering, yes, I have drank every beer I list here. In fact I usually drink more than I list here.Besides the beers I'm listing here, I also drank some Molson and some Guinness. The previous week I drank some Dos Equis. I'll get around to blogging about them one day, but for now we'll stick with these.

Samuel Adams Black Lager

Most dark beers you will come accross will be stouts or porters. Although I thought this beer to said to be a porter (I'll tell you why in a moment), the Sam Adams people say it's neither a porter nor a stout. They say it's a a style that's older than both but less well known, the Schwarzbier. Both the porters adn stouts come from the UK and are heavily hopped. The Schwarzbier is lightly hopped and uses a bottom fermenting lager yeast. That gives it a great alcohol tatse. I find it a cood drinking beer. Good smell, poured with a decent head adn went down clean with a slight alcohol aftertaste. In the end, to me, it tasted like a porter. In fact, it tasted very much like my next beer.

Steelhead Scotch Porter

Mad River Brewing is a small California brewery that makes about severn diferent brews. The Steelhead Scotch Porter is a pretty good one. It tasted much like Sam Adams Black lager, but a little stronger adn a little better. I was alternating these two brews throughout the evening adn they began to taste as one. Don't get me wrong, they were both good. Dark black with a light colored head and a smooth swallow. If you see either give them a try. Next, my favorite beer of the week.

Dales Pale Ale, from Oskar Blues Brewery

This beer made me sad. I was sad that I had only bought one can. It seemed a little weird to buy a beer in a can but my good friend, the liquor store owner, said "try just one can on the house and I promise, you'll come back and buy more." Well, he was right. I will be back for more. Unlike the dark porter/Schwartzbier styles, this paler as you can see and is bitter to the taste as an ale should be. Aside from that I really don't know how describe it. It's one of the most unique tasting brews I ever really had. Slightly metallic though, due to the can. Oskar Blues Brewery say that the can is better for Colorado hikers to put in their backpacks and easier to pack into and out of campsites. So, they can it instead of bottle it but don't let it disuade you from trying it. It's well worth it and my favorite beer this week... er maybe even this month. ::wink::

I'm of the firm opinion that keg beer is best as it is usually freshest. Still got a bit of a problem with the Guinness in a bottle thing. Next, cans. I know this flies in the face of conventional wisdom, but cans keep beer cooler, fresher longer. They block UV light completely and maintain better isolation from the atmosphere than bottles. Then comes bottles. Clear bottles are the worst...virtually no UV filtering (one of the reasons so many Coronas taste like ass), then green, then brown. Damn. Now I want to be in the pub down the street drinking a Guinness.

More people are reporting this site being blocked at work. Maybe we can get Doodi to post fake stock charts on the front page and try to fool the blocking software. Enjoy Dos Equis dark myself. Have you seen the new Sam Adams beer glass?

You are absolutely correct. This usually isn't much of a problem for me because I get my beer very fresh. My supplier makes sure of that. Anything in bottles is kept in boxes or in dark locations. However, Guinness, Boddingtons etc. is preferred from the can. I prefer getting European stuff from the can so I know it's good, especially if I'm getting it from an unknown source.

You can really taste the aluminum after you've poured it in a can?

The taste in this case was very slight but yes I could tell. It was a taste however, that was easily blocked by the other flavors in the beer. I'm only really starting to seperate the flavors in the beer. It takes an experienced and educated pallet to discern all the flavors. I'm far from having an educated pallet but I'm a great student. I'll have a doctorate yet! As far as Dales goes: http://www.oskarblues.com/locations/ I'll link it in the blog proper.
