In the news today:

****

WASHINGTON - A large U.S. spy satellite has lost power and could hit the Earth in late February or March, government officials said Saturday. The satellite, which no longer can be controlled, could contain hazardous materials (beryllium), and it is unknown where on the planet it might come down, they said.

This satellite is the size of a bus, and weighs about 10 tons...

The last one to enter our orbit crashed a few thousand miles off from the area they predicted. Their only positive thought? "It's not the first time this has happened." Aren't you comforted?

Skylab was much bigger and ended up hitting the Indian Ocean and a little bit of Western Australia. Probabilities being what they are...I'm not going to bother digging a hole and hiding. Beryllium is not nice if you breathe it or eat it, but again, unless you plan on sucking in the vapors as it goes down, it is not a big issue. The huge issue is that they cannot control it and therefore, it could land in territory that is unfriendly to the U.S. It is the possible transfer of technology they are worried about. Good thing the earth is 2/3 water...

Oh, and thumbs up for letting me pontificate about technology while looking at a nice rack.

Depends...are they "in session" like they were over Xmas with just one person gaveling them to order so that the president couldn't make any recess appointments? Or in session like they are on C-SPAN when one congressman talks for hours to an empty room? I think you would have better luck if it crashed into a D.C. whore house.
