Points System Explained

OK since the points system has gone live, I have received a lot of questions as to what its really all about. So, here it is...

Q: What is the Point of the Points system?

A: The basic reason we started the points system is to create a way for members to see what other members consistently provide content to the site. This is a valuable tool in learning how to gage participation on 2old2play. For instance, if you see a new blog up on the top of the site and notice the member only has 3 points, then you can probably guess that they are a new addition to 2old2play. It might be nice to shoot over to their blog and say hello. On the flip side, if you see a members with 500 points then you probably know they provide a lot of interesting articles, blogs, or forum post to 2o2p and they will most likely have something interesting to say.

Q: OK, I got all these points, now what can I do with them?

A: The other reason we started the points system was to reward those members who provide great content for the site. For instance, lets say you reach over 1,000 points (hypothetical and not yet determined) by providing great content for the site. Instead of having a basic rank system like blogs, we have come up with Mile Stones. By providing content for the site, you are making 2old2play a better place to visit. So, reaching a Mile Stone has to potential to unlock a certain area or feature of the site. Nothing has been set in stone, but the code allows us to give members access to the same features as SCC members without the need to subscribe. So lets say you got this 1,000 points laying around. Hypothetically you could unlock a theme switcher on the site and be awarded a dedicated member at the same time.

Another side of the coin would allow members to turn in points for merchandise. Say you want a new shirt, download, or whatever. The code would also allow the points to be turned in for real item on 2old2play. Its just another way for us to give back to all the people that spend tons of time on the site, but might not have the cash to help donate.

Q: Is this the same thing as the Karma Points you talk about in the forums?

A: Actually no. The karma points will just be a way of seeing how the community responds to you as a member. Whether they love you or hate you, you can still get points for participating in the site. Karma would just allow others to possibly ignore a poster or thread if they had bad karma. Conversely, if that poster had great karma you might want to check it out.

Q: Where can I view these points?

A: At this time the points can only be seen on your home page (Account Area) and by mousing over the avatar of a new blog post in the header.  We will also be added them to the forums as well as the blogs.

Q: OK I get it. So then how do I earn these points?

A: Well, at this point, there are only a couple places to earn points, but more will be added every day. For right now, points can be received from submitting news that hits the home page, commenting on news, starting a forum thread, commenting on a download, rating a story, rating a download, and a couple others.

As you can see, there a many ways to contribute to the site and some will give out more points then others. For instance, getting news that reaches the home page will get you 20points. while posting a new thread in the forums is only 1point. Also, some action will not give any points so replying to a thread is the forum will get you 0 points. Blogs, Videos, and other features are still on the way and will support points in due time. I personally love the blogs, so I hope to have the points up and running sooner then later.

Q: So when does this all start?

A: Right now the site is just collection points for members just to see how fair the point structure is. If we see to many people posting threads just to get points, we may have to raise the weight of some other features. We have not added any mile stones or point as cash items yet, but that code is already in place and can be turned on at any time. For now, we just want to see how it goes and work out all the kinks. The idea is to create a valuable system for other members to see how other members participate in the site, while allow us to reward those members in the future for all the hard work they do.

Oh and in case anyone is wonder, yes post counts will go away for good in the main forums and be replaced by points. Also, because the clan forums are private and can not be actively patrolled by all moderators, points will not be giving out to posts in the clan forums at all. You will still have your post counts but only for Clan Forums.

Are there going to be any controls put in place to put a check on how "fluffy" the site gets? If you're going to give increased incentives for posting content, I hope good, original content is rewarded better than fluff. (eg. content effectively copied and pasted from other sites) Are blogs going to be given higher value than forum posts? [PS, I'm new here as you can see from my 12 points ;-) ]

@pythonista Blogs will be weighted higher then forum posts since they "should" take more thought and allow for more content. On the other hand, blogs will be moderated for copy and paste tactics and just showing YouTube videos over and over again. The same will go for all content on the site. People who game the point system will lose points.

Do you accept shameless ass kissing for points? How about bribery? Will you take anything in trade? Oh, wait... blackmail! Remember those pics I have from last year's E3 trip? This founding member needs more than his 2 points!

I noticed Code's now at like over 1000 points, he was 280 as of Friday. Iknow b/c we were testing the point system together trying to figure it out. And i noticed you and smoothy are starting at over a G in points too. Where's the love?

@tank Moderators and admins start with 1000 points to begin with. We were thinking that we could convert post counts into points, but I think its better to just start from scratch. After all, people will still keep their post ranks and titles.
