More Updates

Im getting closer to wrapping up the News area (woots!) and we are starting to look into the new forum layout which I think everyone will love. All I have left to do is patch up the look of article comments (they look like ass) and then add back in the article voting stuff. If you notice, I also added a "FIND MORE NEWS" area at the bottom of all news pages so people can search author, subject, and title. Its not totally done, but I hope it makes things easier for people later.

In fact, I have been hearing some people say that the new design is "all about looks" and that it takes away some of the navigation of the site. They have implied that the "face lift" is only to satisfy the eyes and not the actual user. WOAH THERE BUDDY. The biggest reason for the design has nothing to do with look. In fact, we did it because the site lack good navigation from the start of V2. The old layout of the Forum got rid of ALL major site navigation and people had trouble finding, even learning about other functions of the site. Case in point, the insane amount of members that never knew we even had a site chat.  That, just sucked.

Since the majority of our member action happens on the forums, I needed a way to ensure that those members could browse the rest of the site with ease. So that is the very fundamental base of the new design. Its more of a usability redesign then a look design. Sure, the site is pretty, but why not? That to me is only the gravy. Things needed to be change in order to accommodate all the new things 2old2play has had for while.  For example, we wanted the login box to be everywhere as well. Why make users jump to the home page every time they wanted to log in? And while they are logged in, why not give them all the links they love in one "Quick Links box"? Its just smarter.

So yes, you may hate the new look, you may even think its looks like ass. But less functional? I think people just have a lot of trouble with new designs, new navigation's, etc... It takes a while to get used to something new that you used for 2 years. I get that. You may not know it, but the old design of V1...... people loved it.  No really.  They loved THIS!  When we moved to V2 there was an outcry like you wouldn't believe. People freaked.

So I hope you keep that in mind while you learn your way around. Oh, and don't forget. I'm not even 40% done. The forums has not even been touched. Just wait.

Sorry...but I must say v1...that shit was hot, but i think there are just as many or hopefully who appreciate that don't, I am only frustrated because the new layout removes functionality from my browser at work. The background loads over everything, the same thing that happens when I visit major nelsons site, and espn. But I do appreciate the tabbed navigation also provides for a lot more links without revamping more of the site. As I am assured you already know.

Hey godWHYme. What do you mean the background loads over everything? Is there a screen shot you can take? What browser are you using etc.?

I for one think the new design is awesome! It's much more professional looking and you can see that it lend itself to adding cool new features easily. The navigation is much better and the addition of extra blog spots across the top is a welcome change. Fear not Doodi. You can't please all the people all the time (as you well know). Have people already forgotten that you said it's not 100% yet? I'll keep an eye out for problems in the coming weeks but so far I like where you're headed.

It works with my p2 350 running W98 with netscape at work, so I am happy. :) With the increased width, can we have wider sigs?

love the new design. was wondering if the ability to look at the last 25 blogs of the day is gone, or is it desined so we click through other people's favs to get to see a greater amount of blogs, not just the last 6?

Looking good so far man. If you are only 40% done, then I think we are all in for a treat! Glad to hear the forums haven't been touched - cause I'd really hate to think you made it look like ass on purpose! :) Something I miss already (and I hope is on the plate to make a return) is the ability to look at the past 25 or so blogs created. I used that a lot. If it is there somewhere, I suck and cannot find it. I do like seeing more then just the top 4 though, it does help, just not as much as a link to the last 25 :)

also...know you're busy and don't want to hear this, but the link tabs on blogs for comments and what not is too pale a color against the white background. my eyes can barely make out what the links say. if you're changing this in the future, just iggy me.

I think it looks good. just one question... where did the "Top Bloggers this Week" and whatnot go? Or just looking at an overall list of who has blogged in the couple of hours.

The blog list is being redone so that you get more then just the last 25. Im going to add highest voted, most viewed, latest, and so on. The whole blogging are will be totally redone for even more ways to look at blogs and find more bloggers.

Yeah, I've done enough site navigation on my own projects to know exactly where you are going. Unlike my e-commerce site, your site targets a different demographic and userbase with different reasons. This requires a unique form of navigation. Sure, nav would be great if you had one button that did all, but then your site would have ZERO features. To pack them all into a tight navigation is a challenge, and the new tab layout allows for great visibility. Sure, it doesn't work on all site designs, but for a feature rich site that focuses on what we do at 2o2p, it makes sense. Don't forget to style the admin news submission stuff for us news guys :)

Dude. People who think it lacks function know not what they say. The increased navigation was the first thing I noticed when I was at pages that normally don't link to places like Your Blog, Your Profile, et al. I was totally pumped. Definitely a very cosmetic package to benefit the increased amount of stuff that's been crammed in to the site. Don't believe the haters! They'll come around very soon once they've used it and it's 100% done. Like you said before, the site's in alpha stages (maybe by now beta, whatever you think). There's growth still. Party on!

I'm clueless as to what it takes to pull this off, but I love it so far. Thanks, man. I look forward to the additions and changes being made.
