Are we a Community anymore?

I recently recieved a PM from an old friend saying that the site has really gone down hill in the past year or so. There was talk of some old school members of the site who quitely left becuase they felt 2old2play was no longer a community. They sited issues with clans becoming much to insolated, not enough community events, and that all 2old2play did was ask for money from them.

Now I could be crazy, but to me I think the opposite. The community has grown quite large and many clans now live within the 2old2play area. In the recent months we have had 4 contests, the GoW Microsoft playdate, the MML Halo League, and cross clan tournaments for both GoW and CoD. Blogs are updated regularly and the community still responds in full force to our members in need.

So I guess my question to all of you is, what do you think? Is this just the old school members pulling out the "back in the day" talk that almost all communities recieve? Or is it possible that 2old2play just sucks now. I guess the reason I ask is becuase I have always run 2old2play becuase I love the community. I play games with many of you on a daily basis, I read blogs, I search the forums, I sit in site chat, and I watch the front page news. I have never really looked at 2o2p as a job and I certainly havent' made a living off of it. However if the community that we all worked so hard to create no longer cares, what am I to do? If the community feels like we only ask for money, how should I pay for it?

Again I don't personally agree with much of this, however if I have learned anything about people while running this great site, it is that perception is EVERYTHING. It doesn't matter what is true, right, or fact. It only matters what others believe. Each an every issue within the site can be summed up with miscommincation, disbelief, and double talk. Oddly enough 9 times out of 10 most of these problems could be fixed with a beer and a hand shake. Alas this can't and generally won't happen without a LAN or something truely personal to bring members together.

In any case I would like to here from all of you in your own words. Is the work me and the countless others do all for nothing? Are we fighting an uphill battle of pissed of people and poor perception? I look forward to your comments.

If people are feeling disconnected, it's because there haven't been too many games that have kept a majority of a clan together. People feel splintered and/or isolated, and therefore tend to drift away, become disgruntled and wonder why they belong. The truth is that, it takes work to be a part of the whole, which some individuals would rather complain than work on maintaining that closeness/comraderary (sic). Basically, 2old2play offers several pools of gamers with varrying degrees of personality types that will appeal to everyone. If one group is too high strung then, there is a group that is laid back. It takes work to find a niche that you can fit in, and it's a lot easier to sabatoge/complain than it is to get your house into order and do the work to find your buddies. My biggest complaint isn't about 2old2play, it's about microsoft that won't let me put the hundreds of great peeps that I have met on my friendslist. Every person I have to delete from my friends list is a 2old2play member that I had a great time at one point or another. I'm talking about at least 400 people that I have had to axe because of the game turnover, and my changing interests. Keep up the good work doodi and Dsmooth, and thanks for managing a site that meets the needs of the many.

This site and my clan within has completed my gaming experience and poured into full-blown friendships. Where there is growth, there is always dissension, but as a relatively new/old member, I can say that every new member that comes in matches the soul and spirit of the old members that helped make this site what it is. Clans within the site can get quite insulated, but I think that the main forum community is still vibrant with a lot of support and good healthy debate. I love my clan, the HaloTards. The people there are the best. But I still regard them 2o2p members first, not simply HT members. Doodi, don't worry about anything, this site kicks so much ass, I still have bruises. Thanks for bringing this issue to us.

I think the site is great and is only getting better. I spend a lot of the time here in my clan forum, but I also make trips to the main forums and activly try to keep the Nintendo forums going, albiet that is a hard one, and I read the front page and read a few blogs everynow and then. We have as a community matured even for mature gamers and we continue to grow. You have adapted the site to these changes and you are doing a kick arse job at it. If this site went away I would have a very hard time finding another place I could call home, and that is what this is a home to me. but if you want some spice back to the site I can call out the minions to run into rooms and fling poo and then run back out! I haven't had a good thread jack or coffee mug thread in a while!! You are doing great Doodi and I for one wish I was in a better financial situation that I could afford to donate to the site to help out. As of now all I can do is keep spreaduing the word everywhere I can about this great site called 2old2play.com

DOODI, this site is still great. It has grown, as it's member now are more diverse than they were when H2 was the staple and main reason for us all to join. There was a time when we knew of all the members. But now, more great games, more great peeps, and we are at a point where we cannot even fathom knowing everyone. As per the clan issues, the outside forums have at times been a place where you don't want to post due to a couple of asshats jumping all over certain posts and thread jacking.....and yes, a small part of the community "feel" in the outside forums is gone. But then again, they have grown a hundred fold, so these old "training threads" and over XBL training nights are gone, it's mainly due to our sheer size that are not around anymore. That and the diversity of the games played.....I ramble sometimes.....The site is great, change has to happen, and from what I see......all is still good.

Hell the site has become large enough to get put on a Band site list at my work. I am hoping they pull it off the list, but we will see. I think Drost and others have said it best, and change is part of lift. Which I am finding out more every day.

People come and go... change is inevitable, as is growth of something good. I personally have never felt pressured to donate to the site... it was simply an option. Had I a job, I would probably give. Why I never did when I had a job, who knows. I agree with Snuphy though... if I need anwers to some out of the blue question, I turn to 2old2play first because we are such a diverse group, and I like that. Also, like Bunsen said, more and more games comming out tends to split up groups.

Wow, took a while to read all the posts. I have been working and talking with a lot of folks from outside of 2old2play, people in the industry who work for other sites (Destructoid, Twin Galaxies, SFX-360, The 10K, etc) and every one of them has said to me what an incredible community 2old2play is. We rock, period. As many other have already said, I would not be playing online multi-player games if it were not for 2ld2play. And also as others have pointed out, the economy is in the shitter and that affects everything in one way or another. LAN attendance might be down this year, but we WILL have a blast (and bullocks to those who don't join us ;) ). Keep up the good work Doodi, you have created a haven for the imature "mature" gamer in all of us and I for one thank you.

My perception is that things have quieted some, in the blogs, but overall, I don't feel that this community is worthless. Besides, it gives Dastard a place to rant instead of at home:)

Dude, I practically live on this site. No way is this site going downhill, on the contrary i think it's improving with age. Sure most people spend time in their respective clan areas and do most of their ballbusting there but we all venture into the main forums from time to time as well. All I have to say is if it wasn't for 2o2p I'd be forced to watch HGTV all day with no escape from my wife and kids.
