Shared on Wed, 01/17/2007 - 14:42As we approach the "slow" part of the game year, there are some suprisingly good titles on the horizon. I'm looking forward to a few games on the 360 and PS3 and it has brought up an interesting decision.
Obviously, exclusives are a large part of the lifeblood of each console (and the fanboys). But outside of those, if the same game will be released on both consoles which one should you purchase? For me it has all come down to gamerscore. Anyone looking at my gamercard can tell I'm not some super gamer, and anyone who's played GoW with me can attest I'm not an online killing machine. But still, the gamerscore is a great idea and the sound of an achievement unlocked is music to everyone's ears. But here is the best part - I can see my gamerscore easily and in one place. I can compare myself to my friends. That one number - gamerscore - appeals to the competitive nature in all of us.
Game-centric vs. Gamer-centric
Sony's online system is evolving and yes you get achievements. They are all game based. I can look at the leaderboards for R:FoM, I can see my achievements in the game, but I can't see my overall accomplishments on all games in one place. Somehow it's not quite as satisfying. Okay, so I'm 5,153 on the blast factor board - wow. It's just one game.
Sony's system is game based where Microsoft has embraced the gamer - and I think it's a marketing coup for MS. If you can satisfy yourself with mastering just one game that's great. But for console players I've rarely met the person satisfied with only playing one game. MS has created an almost herd mentality where there is a race to get the next great game, unlock achievements and increase the gamerscore. If I want I can compare myself to Major Nelson, look in and see what he is playing. What a great community concept. Friend requests and comparisons are easy and seamless.
MS:1 Sony:0
For crossplatform titles the win goes to MS. Even if the graphics are slightly better on the PS3 (but they haven't been so far), for me the edge goes to the 360 version. Whether for my own self satisfaction or to compare with others, XBL wins the day, and gamerscore is one of the key reasons.
