Is It A Cold Day In Hell?

So, I have done something I never thought would happen. It's as if, by my own actions, I have single handedly, indefinitely, destroyed my credibility as a mac-bashing hater PC user. I've been, traditionally, I'm the John Hodgman of the PC world.

It's not that I bring the hate on Apple products, I own an iPod Nano. However, I've never been a fan of the Mac operating systems dating before OSX. I know OSX was a major change and is built off a foundation of BSD -  an operating system I have great respect for and learned a lot of low level kernel development on (as a test case).

BSD, like Linux, is almost more geeky than that of Microsoft Windows. Where Microsoft went towards easy, Mac seems to have gone towards low level mixed with easy. Sure, it's still not going to play any of your cool games.

Anyway, enough back story. I had an Acer tablet laptop that, literally, broke in half when I closed the monitor one day - very cheesy. I've not been impressed with this Acer since I typed all the letters off the keys three months after buying it. It's so cheap. So I was in the market to buy a new laptop, I checked out two systems: a Dell and a Mac Book Pro.

The Dell, with the 17" core-2 duo was more money than the Apple and I KNOW it would have tons of craplets installed that would require uninstalling. The Mac Book Pro has a DVD Burner (dual layer), 2.33Ghz core-2 duo Intel chip, 17" wide screen monitor, 2GB of RAM and a 160GB hard disk. The only downfall: it was a mac. I was afraid.

Well, I'm blogging on my new Mac Book Pro. Sure, it cost me an arm and a leg but I wanted a laptop that would stand the test of time (read: roughly 4 years) before needing to be upgraded. This one is pretty sweet, and I'm learning OSX quickly. I also spend a good deal of time in the shell accessing information using my traditional Linux methods - very cool.

As for "what will you do to play games?" I will use my AMD 3.2Ghz PC sitting on my desk. This one will be used for Mixing down my podcast, playing music, blogging, php proramming and web design. Seems like a good fit for the job.

Anyway, that's my story. I'd like to thank, BrokenDesign for hooking me up with a Mac Book Pro and being on IM to answer my n00b questions. My wife is in line for a laptop upgrade and this will be her next purchase as well.

Monkey, I've had three Macs now and I couldn't be happier. Although I prefer Linux over all OS, Macs are a happy medium. Your computer life will never be the same, again. Congratulations! Christendom

There's always Parallels if you need to dip back into Windows. It's been updated to run Vista too, so you can do both.

Yeah, I have vista sitting on a CD. I figured I'd need to install it, but I've not found a reason yet. I guess if I wanted to play a non-World of Warcraft game...

Congrats on entering the Mac world. I cut my teeth on a mac mini and really like it. Even though I'm a geek at heart, at this point in my life with job, wife and 4 kids I just wanted something that works. My 2 year old Dell Inspiron m710 is now doing the "ultra slow" and random craziness of Windows and I'm having the same debate you had. Macbook Pro or another Dell. It's a tough call, I still like having some Windows functionality and programs. Anyway, enjoy the Mac!

mac rox (sorry doodi, you fanboy)! i 'switched' about a month ago, still use windows @ work, but won't go back when it's my choice. and as a coder too, the keyboard layout does take some getting used too; hang in there, it'll come. funny thing, when i pull out the dell laptop, i find myself trying to 'drag' the touchpad...

It is always a good day when someone gets the OSX cherry popped. :-) I made the jump last year after Apple went to Intel. I love my iMac, Mac mini, and the various iPods I own. Later this year I plan on getting a Mac Pro to replace my current PC. Don't know when I'll replace the HP lappy (I'm not big into mobility). Enjoy the new Mac and OSX.

Yeah, the OS is easy to learn yet powerful. The system is fast, the hardest part is getting used to the keyboard, as it is with any laptop (mac or otherwise) keyboard position isn't the same on any of them, add to that the apple key along with CTRL and ALT and you've got a recipe for confusion. Still, nothing but impressed so far. Hell, it has SSH and SCP factory installed - I have to download freeware app's for windows to do this. And these are the same ones I use on my linux systems in the house and at work.

Cool man! I am 90% certain my next machine will be a Mac (probably a notebook Mac). I rarely play games on the PC, maybe one or two LAN games a year, and that is it. I much prefer to play games on the consoles I own, or on my DS. It seems there is a TON of useful and neat programs that come standard with the Mac that I could find useful. The only downside, is I am not sure I will be able to stream any video to my 360 anymore if I go that route :(

glad your happy with your purchase. I've only been happy with 1 of the 5 macs I've used extensively. Just not a mac fan.

I'd get a Mac if they put a dx10 card in a mac book pro :) Do you plan on trying boot camp? Jedi, there's programs for macs to stream stuff to the 360. Not sure the names but they hit the gaming news every once and awhile. A couple of years ago I took a photoshop class. We were on early OS X systems. The prof had us try a shareware program for a project. The funny thing is if you did a certain task it the program would freeze. Since everyone was following his directions it froze for everyone. He told everyone to reboot machines. So, while waiting he walked around. he was amazed to find me still working. I just told him to pick up a unix training book. You don't need to reboot a unix machine unless you upgrade the kernel. Good ol' ps and kill and restarting a couple of processes worked just fine.

I've had a Mac for almost 2 years now, and I will never buy a PC again. You'll get used to the small differences in under a week.
