Shared on Sun, 09/24/2006 - 15:21After being consulted on how best to start an e-commerce "stay at home" business, BrightBuilders also sets us up with a site, a merchant account and everything you need to make your company grow....
...for the average joe. Yes, your grandmother could setup a site easily and be able to build a basic webpage and sell cookies or tarts or whatever she wants. But, for someone like myself, it may not be so good.
I've done a good deal of internet web development for automation harnesses and test stations at my last few companies and I know more than your grandmother about HTML, PHP, Perl and general features of the web (ajax, dhtml and all the 10 cent words). So when I asked these BrightBuilders guys "how do I do dynamic sites, access mySQL databases and customize the store layout?" they said "Well...you can't."
HUH? Not acceptable! Well, it was going to be ok for a bit and I was going to work on a side-site that would go live later. Then doodirock and I got to talking and he showed me this content management system (CMS) called Drupal. Oh my, talk about tweakable and powerful. However, with power comes complexity so I've been working day and night on drupal so that I can learn as much as possible so we can "go live" with our new site without delay.
If I was a world of warcraft character, my drupal skill would be roughly 75 (out of 300). I'm leveling up quickly :) Anyway, I just wanted to recommend to anyone that is thinking about e-commerce sites, blogs, forums (well, we have 2old2play who would need another forum!?) to think Drupal. Very sweet, and perhaps I can give you tips after I'm a master drupal coder.
I'm knee deep in coding to get the storefront to look good, contain user-friendliness and just having a good time. I hate rushing, but we have to be ready for the holiday season as it quickly crawls towards us.
Whew, thanks to doodi for helping out and to soon be my hosting provider :-)
