Shared on Fri, 07/21/2006 - 16:46So a few of us (sgreth, and dsmooth from the site) went out to the movies for lunch (totally heterosexual). We work like two minutes from a large theatre so we got tickets yesterday (just incase it was a big packed rush :) ) and went today to see Clerks 2.
So, how was it?
Well, the movie starts out with a great transition from the original clerks "black and white" into the new Clerks II, which is in color. There was very little spoken references from the last movie, I was expecting more "inside jokes" from the prior film but for the most part this movie could stand alone. This, in my opinion, made it a great Sequel because it didn't use the original as a focus point to make this funny (i.e. almost every Austin Powers movie). If you have not seen the first one, you can go see this and not fear that your losing too much. Maybe one or two references, but that's about it.
A few critics went on record as calling this "raunchy" and "not funny humor" - if you didn't enjoy Clerks humor or anything by Kevin Smith and the gang, you won't like it any more or less. However, in my honest opintion, this was NOT as raunchy as they made it out to be. Sure, there is a beastiality scene but its all pretty much implied - you see no actual sex acts. There was a few shocking moments to be sure (it is, after all a beastiality scene) but overal that was as raunchy as it got.
There were many intellectual conversations about sex acts and events but it was purely verbal - I've heard worse on Soprano's. The film was well done in all aspects, containing serious humor, serious situations, stupid humor, and silly Jay and Silent Bob skits. Still, don't bring your kids, but its not as bad as I've heard it was going to be.
How do I know the film was done well? Kevin Smith managed to take a stupidly funny scene and transition into a serious scene without losing the moment. You could be laughing at one moment and feel bad for a person in the next. Unlike many movies that attempt this and you end up laughing at the serious scenes because the prior was just so oddball and the transition so bad that you almost THINK it is supposed to be funny (but they really wanted you to feel for the characters). How he did it so well is beyond me, but it worked.
Many characters return for at least some small scene, as well as a cameo from Afleck and Jason Lee. Nice touch. They introduced a few new characters which could easily return in some type of sequel and be just as funny. One of the new characters, a younger lad, totally religioius and big time into Lord of the Rings and Transformers was just fucking hilarious. He made this movie ten times better because he played the odd ball dorky character that the guys could make fun of so easily and, although you should feel bad for him, you laugh at his sorry dork ass (esp. a scene where they are arguing that Lord of the Rings sucks and Star Wars is awesome).
If your into this style movie I highly recommend it. If you found Clerks slightly boring but still a good classic then I think you'll enjoy this one. Although it does take place in only a few locations (like the first) it seems to have more action and hilarity. If you find Jay & Bob disgusting and you feel dirty listening to them you may want to go watch a chick flick or something.
Would I recommend this? Highly. Will I buy it on DVD someday, yes.
