I mentioned a several months ago to my supervisor that I thought I needed a new graphics card. It really wasn't a big deal at the time and I knew he is always trying to budget wisely.
In the meantime our newest employee asked for the Corel Suite because we have to work with site maps and such, so we got that. I avoided using it for a long time because learning new programs can be a pain in the bootie and I could see from watching her that this was going to be one of 'those' programs. I finally got around to using it a few days ago and it seems like a lot of fun. This aftenoon I was playing with some tools and had just made this really cool transparency out of a combination of a topo and a floodplain map, had printed out my masterpiece to make sure it looked ok and was getting ready to save and boop...the program shut down. No warning, not even a message like that lovely little Internet Explorer one that says it has run into an error and is shutting down now.
Sooo...I was back in my sup's office this afternoon asking for a graphics card (looks like I need more memory too)and he was a little undecided about it. I talked to the new girl and showed her my spiffy new map I made (she is so proud of me I know) and told her about my little mishap and request for the upgrade. She is like, "Oh no we really need all new computers, these are so out of date." I thought that was pretty funny and went back to my sup's office to tease him about it and he was like "Oh no, these are pretty good, you still can't get much faster processors at Best Buy," and next thing I know he is down in her office defending our computers to her. Now I knew better already, I am no expert but I have a pretty good feel for what the different components of a computer should do and he is right but it was funny that he was back in my office a few minutes later saying "Go ahead and get what you need"! I love that man!
