Could a PS3 actually be in my future?

So the latest rumbling in the rumor mill, surfacing basically everywhere on sites such as PS3 Fanboy, Joystiq and Kotaku, is saying that once the 60gb Playstation 3 is taken out back and shot the 80gb model will drop in price to the same $499 price point. Not bad, eh? What really makes me a happy camper is the second part of the rumor saying that a new SKU will be introduced: 40gb at a $399 price point. It would be such a great decision on Sony's part and would more than make up for the killing of the 60gb build.

In an interview with Kaz Hirai, he confirmed the clearance on the 60gb model and made the comment that the decision came being mindful of the fact that the 20gb PS3 did not sell well, while the 60gb took a majority of the pie, eating it whole. Their analysis was that the US market didn't care for multiple SKUs of the console, which fueled their decision to drop the 20gb model in the first place from store shelves. This worries me that the rumor is false, but at the same time one mouth at Sony said the 60gb was going on clearance, another rep said that wasn't true, and then Kaz drops the bomb again, so there's a lot of one hand not talking to the other.

Just so I know for sure that someone has said something about it, just in case someone from Sony is watching and finds me particularly insightful... We didn't like the 20gb because the 60gb was a much, much better value. For another $100 you get built-in wifi, media card ports, and a good sized hard drive. Not that any of those were vital, it completed the home media server package. Hell, I'm sure some people spent the money for the built-in wifi alone. It's just a much better value, unlike the 360 where the only difference between the 2 models was a 20gb hard drive. I'm sorry, that's not worth $100. So there it is. Sony. Since I know you're reading this, give us a 40gb, $399 ps3. I can swing that. I want to swing that. Just don't strip out anything (except 40gb HDD space) and I'm all in.

I would be alot more inclined to do that if they had more games out at the moment! ;) $399 for a 40GB PS3 would be a sweet deal and ALOT more people would jump on the bandwagon. I know I would. But the current price point and lack of good software are the big turn offs right now. Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, Metal Gear 4. That would be nice.

I think its speculation that won't happen. Why kill the 60gb model to create another sku at 40gb? Might as well have kept the 60gb one, how much do you think they'll really lose on that 20gb disk? Probably nothing. As a matter of fact, disks get more expensive over time when they're small. To buy a mass of 20GB disks isn't cost effective when 300gb disks are the norm. At companies I've worked at, we used to buy the best price one and allocate it to the size stated in the specifications. This meant, back in 2001 we build hardware with 10GB disks but allocated them to 1GB as stated on the specification. It was cheaper to buy a 10GB disk than 1 GB disk when the specification and product was designed 2-years prior. Thus, using that logic, Sony would be more apt to keep the 60GB in production than cut it and retrofit everything with 40GB. First, its a paperwork nightmare, adds consumer confusion (we've never seen a 40, knew about a 20, had a 60, now have an ...80? WTF). It also means they've got to re-brand a box, re-write some manuals, update websites, explain to people what they're doing, etc. All that would be avoided by lowering the 60GB to 399.99 and you'd lose a lot less since disk space is a dime a dozen..its CPU and GPU and BluRay that's bleeding them. Everything they've worked towards is exactly opposite of this rumor. Doesn't mean they won't confuse us again, but it does seem to go against all policies their setting up. Let's face it, you're going to have to buy an expensive console. If Sony wants to save money on rebranding more crap, they should just invest in buying a couple exclusives to drive console sales.

What's worse is that Sony execs have been quoted at saying something to the effect of they feel $600 is a good price point for the system, so they seem to really want to stay at that price come hell or high water. They might be more likely to continue releasing new SKUs that have larger and larger hard drives in order to make it stay at $600. If that's the case they might as well discontinue the Playstation brand because it would crash and burn.
