Well...at least I didn't poop myself.

Compared to yesterday today was like a small piece of heaven. I was able to accomplish quite a bit around the house and still managed to get in some time to myself. Not to mention I had Chipotle for lunch!

So on to the title of this blog. I decided to go ahead and pull the monitor from the Altered Beast cabinet and remove the chassis board from the bottom and start getting it preped for the parts that are on the way. I followed the instructions for discharging the monitor and everything went smooth. Not even a single pop or crackle (if you don't know what I'm talking about here's a link). So anyway, after feeling comfortable enough to start pulling the remaining harnesses and neck board I noticed there were 2 white wires coming from the CRT that were soldered to a resistor and then over to a couple of quick disconnect pins on the board. I labeled them and disconnected them. I was writing some info down on the remaining wiring leaning in with a flashlight to read some labels on the PCB when.....BANG!!! HOLY SHIT! WTF WAS THAT?!?!?!?!?! One of the white connectors managed to role over in just the right way and even though the connector was insulated it hit a grounding prong that was just long enough to reach the metal connection on the inside. WOW. My heart was running 90 miles an hour! I'm still not sure what happened but, I'm guessing the anode discharged. I don't know yet. One thing is for sure I'm going to do some more research and figure out what the hell happened so I don't make that mistake again. For some reason 29,000 volts doesn't seem like it would be much fun to touch.

Like I said, at least I didn't poop myself.

Voltage hurts but it isn't what will kill ya (relatively speaking). I was building a Jacobs Ladder out of an old neon sign and took it from one arm through the other, thankfully I was standing up and it slipped out of my hands . That shit hurt and put me on the ground. It's true what they say, you can taste the copper. 20k volt was on the transformer with low current. I also took a discharge from a 19" crt tv that threw me into a wall. I'm fiiiiiiiiiiiine and dand..........what the hell was I typing?

12,000 volts was the max that I've been hit with, courtesy of a shorted power supply in a logic controller I was working with in college (the dumb ass before me screwed up the wires and created a hot neutral). The shock didn't hurt as much as my back from being thrown into a table that was bolted to the floor. I don't remember it actually happening, but I know of a teacher that still uses my experience as an example to the new students. (I changed majors shortly after that) Yeah, it's not something you want to experience.

At first, I thought you were talking about not needing Chipotlaway.

LOL no claude! I love chipotle! Biznass - I've seen the jabos ladder diy stuff. Neat shit but, don't think i will ever try one. I'll stick to the easier lower voltage stuff. Automan - what type of logic controller was it?

I think it was an Anorad cabinet of some sort (but it may have been an ancient Alan Bradley system. I remember it running on 220v and it was slightly smaller than refrigerator. It was a basic Ladder Logic course, so the hardware was less of a concern, but someone knocked the power supply lose from the cabinet, I reached in a gave it a little push to seat it and BLAMO!!!

Aw the memories........ Working as an Electrician before and through Industrial Electronics school I tasted 120ac, 230ac (Single phase) 480ac (Single leg wye and delta) even in a bucket during rain and snow storms, but NOTHING compares to the 25" CRT!! That not only hurts like shit, but it actually SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME and the humming in my ears lasted a full minute.
