School bans tag, other chase games

So I read the above article about how some school administrators across the country are banning some play activities like dodgeball, tag, and touch football fearing that children might get injured and their school could be held liable. Then I read this gem:

Teaching kids to fight back against classroom invaders

Ah, I see. Chase tag is bad because children might get hurt, but since our schools are not safe from gun wielding maniacs, let's train them to do law enforcement's job and neutralize invaders - nevermind ignoring the public education system's obligation to create a safe environment conducive to learning. Makes sense to me.

In education, there's a thing called "flavor of the month". Things change constantly. Knee-jerk reactions are the worst. Im really hoping No Child Left Behind is a flavor of the month too. We had a bomb threat at my school today, the latest in a rash of 8-10 in the district this year and its only the 7th or 8th week of school. I enjoyed trying to keep 25 12&13 tr olds somewhat manageable for 2 hours outside. Mike
