Why can't I get a day off?

Ok, I admit it, I am good at my job.  Fine.  All I want though is a damn day off.  Not a weekend, I am talking like a random vacation.

So I decided since I was in charge, it was time to take a stand and take a week off.  The week of December 11th, I am going on vacation.  I am going to sleep in and relax and game, mess around on the computer..do some Christmas shopping (sabre wants a new thong).

But nooooo....

I can't get Monday off becuase Dr. Skudder is having a major clinic and I need all hands on deck.  Thats fine, I will take the rest of the week...

Noooo....Wednesday we have to have a off site vascular clinic in a rural area becuase we can't get back out there until January.  Fine I will take half the day off..and the rest of the week.

Noooooo....Dr. Smith is doing a aortic arteriogram and needs me there to run the imaging and he won't let anyone else do it.  Sure, that time is it I say. 8am....ohh WTF.  Its nice to me needed, but I am definately going to need to drink one of the days I actually get to stay home.  I don't drink much since there is a family history of alcholism and I don't care for the taste all that much.  But I can't even enjoy a beer because I might get called into work to do somethign.....well, F that, I am drinking one of these days...come join me won't you?

Well, I almost know you mean. They don't like it when I am gone, but they know that I will leave if they try to stop my vacations. My wife on the otherhand is a third year resident at the same hospital. She gets vacation whenever they choose, and they don't schedule very far out, so it can be tough to plan anything. And I used to be on call 24/7 too. It gets really old. There was one time that I was called and they wanted me to come in, but I was four hours away visiting a friend. They tried to bring all hell down on me the next Monday. It didn't work. When I took the job I asked, is there a back up for me when I might not be near? They said "Nope, just live your life and it will be fine" When I reminded them of that, It was my boss that got his ass kick, and later demoted. Anyway, hope things smooth out for you.
