What is wrong with me?

I am turning down an opportunity….a big one...kind of… I just had an old supervisor of mine stop by and BEG me to apply for a job….it was job #3 from 2 blogs ago. $17,000 per year more than my current job. But I REALLY don’t want the job. It would lock me into a chain of command, a chain that revolves around kissing the ass of someone I cannot stand to look at let alone work with. The job is off contract, at will termination, and the work is painfully dull (and coming from a contract accountant that is really saying something). I’d be the only one with a degree applying for it, they are telling me that I would (unless the highest powers of the office came down from their mythical mountain top pallace and bitch-slapped me out of contention) be the one they would pick….but holy hell I don’t want that job, not that my current job is at all entertaining, but this one would be torture.   I am tempted to tell them if they add another $5k to the pay I’d do it, but all that would do is put a bulls eye on my back when layoffs start and being a non-contract position I'd have to wait until my first paycheck to see if payroll accepted the pay grade(they have a habbit of denying raises that aren't on contract..

It almost made me sick to say I wasn't interested ...I really think that something is wrong with me that I’m turning this down in exchange for a chance to apply for a job that would be a $6,000 raise.

I need someone to come over here and slap me across the face.

it is very hard, but laying my career on the line for a jump like this....4 years ago I would have jumped all over it. But being in a position that is so solid they couldn't uproot me with a backhoe makes me a little cautious in going to such an unsure position.

The reason I'm so secure in my job is that I'm the only one they have capable of dealing with the volume of work I get. what makes it hell is also what makes me so safe here.

I think you already have your answer. This isn't a great time to be out prospecting, either. Just my opinion, so that and $2 will get you a cup of coffee.

Take the job, you'll rock it, and have that other douchebag's job in no time. "We're all kissing someone's ass at one time or another, at least get paid for where you stick your tongue."

Can't buy sanity, brother. Sounds to me like you made the best choice. I made the move after being lobbied HEAVILY by another employer, $15K more than I was making, etc, etc. Guess who was first to go when things got rough? That was three years ago. I'm still a stay-at-home dad now. A bird in the hand...

This is killing me, having been burned before (over a $1,500 raise and a job that had me wanting to curl up in a ball and cry at the thought of going to work) I'm still the type of person who always chases the money. I see the mouse trap, I still want to try to grab the cheese. Burnt fingers teach a better lesson than words. I need to remember my burnt fingers.

Do it, that's a nice pay raise. Then hop to the next opportunity when that arises.

@lala, the problem is that there aren't any other opportunities after this one. taking this job would for all intensive purposes, taint me. other departments do not hire anyone but file clerks out of this section. there is even an established policy that once you go there, it basically wipes your work history, no seniority. It is a one way trip to invoice processing land.

but at the same point, you've been bitching about you job for how long? And you've been looking for other opportunities as well. That's a pretty nice jump in pay, I'd have a hard time passing it up.
