Nice day for a walk

I’ve been meaning to post something like this for a while, but with the increased pressure at work it has taken me a while to prepare and write….

I realized an odd thing on my way into work yesterday, Harrisburg really is a beautiful city….its really not something I get to notice since I’ve seen it all my life, it has always just been “Harrisburg” now don’t get me wrong, like any city it has it’s slums, and places where a little “white boy” like me would get shot simply because I am there….no really, Allison Hill….more murders there than the rest of the city combined…..but that’s why I don’t go there…..EVER….but the capital complex, City island….from Walnut street and 7th street all the way to the West Shore, it is a beautiful and safe place, and while I didn’t’ take a picture of 2nd Street, there are more restaurants and clubs there then in all of the areas surrounding Harrisburg combined….and apart from the Appalachian Brewing Company is the best place to eat in the city limits…

Thanks to a company parking spot we park on City Island, we get a nice view from our spot to the West Shore of the Susquehanna River.

From there we walk under the Market Street Bridge, I love the design of this bridge, it is a shame they don’t make bridges like this anymore. The picture is a bit dark from the sunrise in the background, but there’s another picture of it later.

We do get to walk right past one of the Harrisburg landmarks, the home of our beloved Harrisburg Senators minor league baseball teams. I say beloved, because we all feel like crap that they are currently 6-22 for the season….I don’t think we’ll be making it to the post season this year….

From the stadium we walk across the last remaining half of the Walnut Street walking bridge, this bridge was designed for horses and carts to cross the river, so as automobiles gained popularity, the bridge was closed to vehicles….although there is still a carriage that uses it.

But the view from the bridge is amazing, the view to the North shows how sparsely populated much of the area surrounding the city is.…

and to the Southeast, looking over part of the city, and the Market Street Bridge in the Sunrise

the city has its old parts, always being rebuilt and restored.

and it has newer parts as well, like the Federal Court House.

(Sorry for the blurry immage, I was getting some strange looks and wanted to avoide getting hauled in for questioning.)

But as we near the capital, we walk past Strawberry Square, where every new years they drop a giant strawberry…but there are a few shops, a few offices an awesome clock and a science center.

Directly across the street (pardon the construction) is a big park that surrounds the capital building.

the Capital building is really made up of 3 buildings, but the central building itself (I don’t have a picture of it because I was starting to run a bit late) is amazing, resembling the US capital building, slightly smaller but just as impressive.

And as I cross the street to my office, I get a nice view of the Forum. It’s a somewhat small, but still fantastic classically designed round theater.

and so here I sit, in my cubicle farm, waiting for the day to end so I can walk back through the city…..

Total distance covered, .96miles.

Also; thanks for the support I received on my past post, it’s nice to know there are people who understand.

And just a quick shout out to 2old4timmy, great COD WaW“training” last night….well, all 10 seconds of it before we started knifing and gunning down each other….and why the heck was I constantly spawning in front of Dread?

one last thing.....Gamestop is now taking preorders for the Modern Warefare 2 Limited Edition. I have my 2 copies preordered.

Nice pics. It is a good reminder, too, that all of us should try to look at "old" surroundings with a "new" eye from time to time. It helps us better appreciate what we have and not what we want. Thanks!

Thanx for the reminder to slow down today. I get so wrapped up in the hustle of every day life I sometimes forget to stop and just take it in. BTW that is a beautiful area. Thanx again

@snuffy, yes it has a giant murel surrounded by gold leaf, I don't often get a chance to get in there, but if I do I will post a few pics...and one of these days I'll have time to take a pic or two of the capital building from Soldiers Grove....or maybe take a shot from inside the capital rotunda. I don't have any reason to go there with my work, but I have all the accesses of someone who does...
