Yes, I know it is a bit of a strong title, but seriously…LEGENDS. I took the time on Saturday to take a trip with my father (which was interesting to say the least) to the Ft. Indiantown Gap National Guard Base. There we got to watch a World War 2 reenactment (which I just realized that I spelled wrong on all of my videos…thanks Spell Check…I guess there is no “I” in reenactment…) I took plenty of cool pictures of men in uniforms, beautifully restored guns and vehicles. And ended up with 2 AWESOME interviews….first, as I was wandering through the WW2 memorabilia swap meet I saw this lovely lady standing in the corner and HAD to talk to her….her name is Rosie May….aka THE Rosie the Riveter(hmmm and apparently there’s only one “I” in Riveter...).
After that we traveled to the Mock German Barracks where I ran into someone who was anything but “Mock”. A quick interview (but I wasn’t the one asking the questions this time) with Unterführer (Lt.) Gherheart with the Frundsberg Division of the Waffen-SS
Later he admitted that he was embarrassed to admit that he was wounded and captured by the French Partisans who planned to execute him and his comrades until an American Sergeant stepped in and saved his life.
I did feel like I should have thousands of questions for a man like this (who now lives just outside of Phoenix, AZ), but I drew a complete blank…I’m still not sure what I could have asked him.
and then there was lots of this….
And this
I have some other vids I’m trying to share….but it’s taking some time to upload. (1.9gb of 720p 60 FPS and youtube do not get along.) most are of the actual reenactment, all you could see was the Germans firing off their artillery (I think it was an Infanteriegeschütz L/27) until the end when the Americans storm the hill….a note for next year, if they want us to witness the tactics of the American troops, they should put the spectators in a position where we can see the gully they are approaching from and not just the top of the hill behind the Germans. But I will post what I can of the other vids and pictures once I have them uploaded.
By the end of the day I was ready to sign up for next year’s reenactment as a full participant….which is where my father and I differ…he enjoyed the events but kept referring to the reenacters as loonies, or disturbed individuals to devote that much to an event that took place 65 years ago(but he never misses the Civil War Reenactments at Gettysburg) ….which only made me want to participate even more.
