Game #2 off to a bad start.

I picked the second game to review as Anarchy Online. With the current free subscription level, they have a lot to offer. Basically, the game is free to play through 1/15/2011 (yeah, kind of an odd date.) so, I thought it might be a nice change from EVE…..and so far it is little more than an annoyance, and I haven’t even finished installing it. This file is not very big, but it is took forever to download. After that, I had several issues getting the loaded information to stop fighting with Vista only to have our Alienware freeze mid install once I thought I had the issue resolved. But after disabling my virus scan the install went flawlessly.

The game starts in a space station with the standard character generation and skills assignment we are all so familiar with, then your new character is off to the landing shuttle….which promptly crashes.   Thus starts the tutorial missions. Learn to move learn to fight, heal, loot, use the map, there are actually quite a few help missions.
The controls are WASD standard, and the Graphics appear to have remained the same since Anarchy Online was created in 2001. It is strange to remember how things were a mere 8 years ago.
Soon you are close to level 10, or 15 in my case. And you are able to head to the mainland. But first you have to pick a Faction to join, the rebels, or the giant corporation Omni-tek. Being the Good Capitalist and MS supporter that I am I sold my soul to the giant corporation that runs the planet.
As I Left the training island where I was ravaging level 10 creatures, I was confidant in my abilities, able to take out giant snakes (3-4 times bigger than me) and as I teleport to the persistant world, I am immediately jumped and killed by 15-20 goose like level 2-3 flying creatures….I remember this happening in Ultima where people would teleport into an area that happened to have tons of Dragons, Wyvern, Demons, and Ancient Wyrms.   But here is was more embarrassing than anything else, but I continued on.
After a bit of exploring and creature killing, I made enough money to buy an apartment….which assigned me a place in the main Omni-Corp city….When I arrived there I promptly got lost and never did find my apartment.
After getting lost several times, and unable to locate the goals for even the most basic quests I decided it was time to move on.   Overall, it was an interesting game, the Free Play is a major bonus (though you do have to pay to participate in the expansion packs) but I have to once again pass on hanging around.
Tomorrow I’ll post my next review, the 3 days I spent with RuneScape.
