The First Annual 2old2play Rock Your Face Off

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, Cats and Dogs, and all you other weird ass punks hiding in your corners, we the staff at 2old2play with the help of the great folks at Harmonix, are pleased to announce: The First Annual 2old2play Rock Your Face Off.

On Saturday night August 16th at the Chicago LAN Party, there will be an event to end all events, a party to end all parties, and the duel concert of your life--if you are really lame and consider a bunch of drunk people playing Rock Band a concert.

That's right folks we're having a battle of the bands. There's no cost to enter, there will be prizes, and you will look like a total jackass in front of the people in attendance and to the people watching the webcam. Sounds like a great time right?

The exact timing of this epic battle is still to be determined but everything should kick off around 8 or 9pm on Saturday. The prizes have been determined, but we're not telling at the moment. Let's just say they are going to be well worth your time and practice, (did I mention this was being done with the help of Harmonix).

Enough of the hype here’s the details on how this whole thing is going down:

We kicked around several different formats for the tournament. We decided to go with the one that would be the fairest, and less random.

Step 1: Get Prepared

  1. Get a band together (Drums, Guitar, Bass, and Singer)
  2. We will be playing on a new out of the box kit. If you want to play on anything different, feel free to bring it. (Some restrictions apply, see bottom)
  3. Rock Your Faces Off!! We will be drinking and having a good time. That's what it's about.

Step 2: Practice

We will be having four tiers of progression through the tournament. In order to move onto the next tiers, you have to play/score well. The songs that were chosen were meant to be fun, and were to try to include as many people as possible. The tiers and rules are as follows.

Two bands will be performing at the same time on different screens in a Face Off. Both bands play the predetermined songs, and then get to pick one song of their choosing to play themselves and force the other band to play as well (four songs total, some songs restrictions). In the best interest to keep the tournament moving, we are suggesting to keep the song you choose under five minutes. Note: You can't play the same song twice.

Depending on the number of bands we have playing, the bottom 20% will be cut. For example, 8 bands start, after the 1st tier, 2 bands will be cut. After the 2nd Tier another 2-3(50%) bands will be cut. Same rules from the 1st tier apply to the 2nd tier. The 3rd tier will be slightly different, with player chosen songs replaced by 1 random song that all bands will have to play on Hard.

Each band will be given a veto if they don't like the song chosen, either for difficulty, it sucks, or whatever. There will be some songs on auto veto, either for severe difficulty, length, or suckage. The top two bands go onto the fourth tier for a Face Off on one song to determine the winner, no points, just skill.

Scoring will be determined by a points system centered around your score for the predetermined songs. (I.E. top score/1st place will get eight points, 2nd place seven points, 3rd place, six points, ...8th place one point.) The winners of the player chosen songs will get 2 points per song. At the end of the 1st tier with eight bands playing, the max score could be 20 points assuming the band wins everything.

First Tier Songs: Played on Medium

  • Dani Kalifornia-Red Hot Chilli Peppers
  • All the Small Things- Blink 182
  • Each band chooses 1 song each(medium)

Second Tier Songs: Played on Medium

At the end of the 2nd tier, the bands will be cut by 50% using the same scoring system.

  • Dead on Arrival-Fallout Boy
  • The Hand that Feeds-Nine Inch Nails
  • Each band chooses 1 song each(medium)

Third Tier Songs: Played on Hard

At the end of the 3rd tier, the top 2 bands will move onto the 4th tier.

  • Saints of Los Angeles-Motley Crue
  • Welcome Home-Coheed and Cambria
  • Each band plays the same random song. Each band is allowed 1 veto for the random song. Some songs will already have an automatic veto TBD as needed.

  • Fan Choice-TBD by the fans (See auto Vetos)

Songs over 5 minutes long will not be available until the last two rounds.

When you sign up at the LAN please list your chosen songs, so that we can make sure they are available, or need to be downloaded before the tournament starts. If you have any questions about a specific song, please feel free to send a PM to Rau or NoGame22.

FAQs

Hey I can't find a singer, can we still play?

  • Yes you can, but your score will be lower.
  • There will be plenty of people who are drinking, and wouldn't mind singing a song or two. (we'll see how it goes)

Hey why did you choose these songs? They suck!!!

We agreed to choose songs that: 1) could be sung, 2) weren't insanely long, 3) were around medium difficulty, 4) wouldn't mind hearing over and over again, 5) because after playing more than 100 songs, we said screw it.

A special thanks to Rau and TMX for taking the time to go through all the songs, and help with the rules.
