Summer Reading

Well, I've been tearing through books these past 2-3 months, especially the past 2 weeks (the mother-in-law is here).

Drost, my esteemed Overchoad got me hooked on The Dresden Files.

His first book, started out slowly, but with each consecutive book the story and characters have only gotten better and better.

I've ripped through the first 8 books, and have #9 in my Library queue. If you like fantasy that involves magic, wizards, knights, faeries, etc... Butcher weaves a very good story.

Now, I know that there is a TV series on Sci-Fi for The Dresden Files, and I watched the first episode, and was pretty much unimpressed. I'll watch a few more episodes, but my gut feeling is that they won't be able to include some of the better aspects of the books into the TV series: I.e. - werewolves, faeries, the Nevernever. I just don't know if they have the budget for that stuff, and I feel those aspects of the books are very key to the overall story. We'll see I guess.

Since I was impressed with Butcher's writing, I decided to check out his other series: Codex Alera.

This series is more of your typical Fantasy genre, and again, IMO, I feel Butcher weaves a very good story with decent characters.

With all this magic and fantasy, I tend to burn my self out and have to read some other genre. I'm behind on my reading of Marine Corps stories from Iraq, so these are what are in my queue at the library: (Most of these books deal with the Battle of Fallujah)

And then, some other stuff in Queue:

I'm a huge R.E. Feist fan, as well as a big fan of The Dragonlance series. Good stuff. The Ice Man is a "biography" about Ricard Kuklinski, who was a contract killer for the Mafia. HBO did 2-3 specials on him. The book should be really good.

I'll be posting good pi[c]s this afternoon!

Weis&Hickman are great. Dragonlance is still cool. Give R.A. Salvatore a try if you haven't already.

No True Glory is a great book. I spent 6 months in Fallujah with 82nd ABN long before the Marines showed up. That place was a crap house than as well.

The did have the werewolves episode, but it did not have faeries or the nevernever (at least not what I can recall). I also think the show was renewed for season 2 :( dammit.\r \r The first episode shown isn't really the first episode. It was the one with the fewest effects needed, so was the quickest to shove out the door to the public. The first episode is Storm Front which aired 8th. So, I think we can conclude this show went the way of Firefly, fracked over by the network by airing out of order, and thus confusing the viewers.\r \r You should give the DVDs a try, maybe they'll be in the correct order there. I don't think they are out yet, but they should be at some point.\r \r I have the first 2 Dresden books and the first 2 Codex ones as well. Only read the first Dresden one, and I can already tell I like his storytelling!

Love the Dresden Files. Started reading them at the end of May. I just started Death Masks and have been enjoying the series more and more each novel.
