Opinionated is not a real word
So I'm playing Gears of War, and then I got motion sickness. The sad part is that I kept on playing, like some baboon that's been wired to direct-stim the pleasure center of his brain and then given the button to activate it, the game is that good. I'm going to rant in the next paragraph, you better tune out if you don't like reading anything negative about this game.
What can I say, the game runs at about 28 to 30 fps, and plays somewhat smoothly. The game makes for some insanely good looking screenshots. The problem with this is that screenshots are great for hyping a game, but horrible for determining how smoothly the game plays. I like 60fps. 60fps makes it easy to forgive Ninja Gaiden Black for repeatedly beating me down. 60fps in Project Gotham Racing (the original, not any of the turd sequels) made the game and the subsequent handling of its cars razor sharp. 60fps made Gran Turismo 4 worth coming back to time and again, even in a Daihatsu midget. I'd like to see the next installment of Gears of War run at 60fps, to enhance the experience. OK, so each and every one of my 60fps statements can be qualified with the suffix, "in my head", so that makes them really subjective.
On a recent trip to Japan, a friend and I were taking a stroll through Ryu-anji, one of Japan's oldest actively maintained temple complexes. There were remarkably well preserved warehouses that were actually above the ground on stilts in order to keep vermin out of supplies, and a magnificent wooden pagoda that went up about five stories. The walkways were made out of hewn stone, and the decorative tile roof panels were in remarkably good condition. What does this have to do with Gears of War? While the sun set on this magnificent example of Japanese culture, and the last rays of sunlight shone around us from over a nearby wooded hill, I turned to my friend and said, "I'm getting about 90fps on this, I wonder what kind of GPU they're using."
Framerate is precious to me. It helps me to further tune out reality, and get into the game so I don't need to think about things like the spread of Buddhist teachings in a largely Shinto practicing culture or mortgage payments. There are some parts in Gears of War where the framerate drops. During those few moments, I start thinking about stupid shit like interest rates and the Libertarian political party, and whether I need to get a new blade for my cordless circular saw. I don't want to be thinking those things while playing the next installment of Gears of War.
