Gears of War - The Real Story Part II
First off, thanks to Jmarps for introducing me to a great online forum and overall website. I'm happy to be a new member and finding 2O2P a great resource for gamer knowledge and opinion.
Jmarps hit it the nail on the head with his comments. I don't believe my post on the Epic Games website was a rant. It was only a few paragraphs and I highlighted the good and the bad. Also, I only mentioned Halo2 because it's 1 of 4 XBOX games that I own and by far the best multiplayer mode that I've experienced. I have limited cash to spend on games and when one such as Gears of War comes along with it's Jupiter sized hype and ratings, I buy it. I buy it not only to see what the 360 can do but also because I expect it to have lasting appeal. For me, lasting appeal translates into a great multiplayer mode.
The biggest problem I have with Epic Games list of rules is #3 (C). I'm not saying GOW has to look/act/talk/walk like H2, that would be boring. I'm just saying, I want it to have that lasting appeal, where when I have 30 minutes of free time it's the game I pick up and play. That's awesome some of you can't wait to beat the Campaign mode over an over again at higher difficulty settings. For me, that sort of game play is too repetitive. That's why I look to multiplayer, because it's always something new and it's never the same.
Why would you NOT want to compare your game to one of the best? Could you imagine a company like Chevrolet saying something like; Our vehicles are the best, buy from us, look how high our cars are rated... But wait, if you compare us to Toyota and hold us up to their standards, then damn you, that's not tolerable, get the hell out of here and don't ever come back! Are you serious? That kind of attitude wouldn't fly in the real world. It seems to me that the developers want to shelter themselves from any criticism and valid concerns of the customer. You can call that trolling, railing, suck-ing, whatever you want. I think it's really cowardice on the part of the developers. The simple fact is that the most important part of this game didn't hold up after all the hype settled.
I second Jmarps on his comments that the customer should drive the development of games because ultimately we provide the funding. It is all about the dollar and they come from all of us. I feel like a mini stock holder of XBOX and Epic (a very minor tiny insignificant one) having thrown down a lot of cash for this system and these games. We should all be able to voice our opinions, good or bad, and help shape new games . Censoring and shutting us out will only lead to a less successful product and a slimmer bottom line for companies like Epic Games.
