So….I was in the other room the other night, either watching TV or masturbating, and I heard a loud crash. I started going towards the noise and a few seconds later, my dog lets out loud howls of pain, ones I have never heard from him. I run over to him, he is on the ground motionless, his food ejected on the carpet, and he is laying in his own urine. After saying fuck a dozen times, he regains his senses after about 15 seconds…it was all the swearing. My thought is that he either had a stroke or was choking, and when he fell on the floor it dislodged his kibble. He is not slurring his bark nor has he been asked to do the New Year’s countdown next year…so hopefully it was not a stroke. He has been acting normal since. I called the vet, and he has an appointment today, only to come earlier if there is a change.


A little on the dog…Aslan, Golden Retriever, will be 14 in April, huge testicles, one of the most important things in my life, I take him to work with me almost everyday.


OK…so he’s getting older…I was just curious. Age is starting to beat him down a bit. I honestly don’t know if I could ever get another dog…this one is perfect for me…but family/friends have been told me I should get another before this one is gone. How many got another dog before theirs passed? Did it help? I still think mine will live forever, and he does great for an old guy. I think I will wait until he is humping Jesus’ leg before I can even think about it.

It's a total toss-up. It's good for the pup to have the older dog teach him where to sleep, poop etc. Sometimes the old dogs seriously do not appreciate the company or the change of lifestyle that comes with having a hyper pup jumping all over them.

Aslan is a great dog. Sorry to hear he is having problems. I haven't had a dog since High School so I can't be much help on recommendations. \r \r Nice write up by the way.

we had to put down my dog about a month ago. It sucks.\r \r As far as getting another dog, Dahji is correct for the first time in his life. It woulb be good for the new pup and could be a pain in the ass or worse for the old boy...

i have been where you're at. my only advice is to do what feels right. i had to put my rotti down on a thursday and saturday morning i was coming home with a new dog. after years of slinging my legs out of the bed to get up and hearing him tell me how much he disapproved of me waking him up, the first night he wasn't there told me how much i needed another one. don't think of a new dog as a replacement (because he will never replace him) think of the new dog as a continuance of your caring for an animal that never asks for anything except your love and affection

He does have some HUGE balls. Sorry to hear about the puke you had to clean up....you sure he wasn't protecting you from a Boomer?\r \r Nice jab at Dick Clark.....I've never seen a more painful New Year's Countdown. Enough already with the slurring....is it possible that he can do that in 10 seconds. ...niiinnnnnne.....eighhhttttt....seven..... (ball drops).....siiiiiiiiix.....fiiiiiiive...\r \r NG\r \r P.S. My vote is for getting another pooch.

you have a golden retriever? have you ever had him checked for epilepsy? weird i know, but a gf in high school had a gr and the exact same thing happened to him when he would had a seizure. we'd sit with him and rub his legs and stomach until his seizure ended and then massage the cramps out of his legs. scared the bejeezus out of me the first time it happened, but it was exactly like what you said happened to your boy. just a thought to have your vet look at. hope he is ok:)\r moes

Thanks everyone...the comments helped...just got back from the vet and he is assuming it is a seizure...ran some blood work and will get back to me tomorrow. Moesley, you are a genius.

i really hope everything is ok for you and aslan for a long time. the king has to have the biggest balls in the land.\r \r when the sad time comes, you will know what to do. just listen to yourself. my oldest dog had problems this summer, and we had no choice but to put him down. just a horrible thing, but he could no longer care for himself. \r \r we got a puppy(we = my wife while i was at work) just a few days after. we love louie, but no one can replace bernie.\r \r i hope it's a little better atleast knowing what happened.\r \r good luck!

Wow, your dog said \"fuck\" a dozen times?!? I thought I was awesome when we got them to pee outside.\r \r Seriously, we had one dog passed over a year ago. I thought the other would go through depression, as they were litter-mates. \r \r This didn't happen, surprisingly.\r \r Anyway, dogs are just as different as people. If you think you or the dog would need that sort of companionship, I say go for it, if you need space and time, then wait for the right time (and dog).\r \r Godspeed, Aslan.

Came to your blog for the Mrs. Robinson story. Then the story of Aslan caught my attention. Being in the bussiness I am a sucker for an animal story. Epilepsy is probably the best thing it could be if you indeed witnessed a seizure, which it sounds like you did.Hopefully by now he is on a anti-seizuring drug and doing well. You should post an update. Good luck.
