eBay has announced the profits and some statistics about their "sales figures" on next-generation consoles... eBay, or as some annoyed gamers call it "sleazebay," referring to people they think are sleazebags who buy a launch system only to flip it for a profit, have announced the Wii and Playstation 3 auction numbers.
Between November 17th and November 24th, there were 14,576 Playstation 3 auctions over that eight day period. The average selling price of a Playstation 3 during that time was $1186 USD. With eBay making around 3%, that makes them around $518,514 USD in profit.
The sales numbers when you look at mid October when pre-orders went online are a little bit higher. Between October 19th and November 24th the number of Playstation 3 auctions almost doubles to 28,233 and the average selling price was $1370 USD.
The Wii also had a flurry of activity on eBay as well. From November 19 to November 24th, there were 26,708 Wii auctions with an average selling price of $412. Factoring in 3% for eBay, they made $330,110 USD profit in that eight day period. If we look at the period covering Wii pre-orders through Back Friday, so October 19 through November 24, there were 29.452 Wii auctions with an average selling price of $427.82 USD.
Just to be fair, eBay also released Xbox 360 activity over a similar time period. From November 12th through November 24th 331 Xbox 360's were sold on eBay with an average selling price of $421. Which is not a surprise since you can pick up an Xbox 360 pretty much anywhere right now. Microsoft is flooding the market to help capitalize on launch system shortages.
