Their first edition, spotlighting Super Mario Bros. 2, was so long ago and as a kid many of us enjoyed the maps, cheats and interviews with some of the industries finest. Now, however, inside sources have told 1up that layoffs may be in the future for some folks.

In July, 2005 Nintendo revamped their design to target a different type of audience, a more "hip and cool" editorial format accompanied the re-design. A new report on IGN suggests Nintendo Power may be facing its final days. Inside sources from the magazine said mass layoffs are taking place, with employees told they should begin looking for jobs elsewhere by September.

Other rumors say that Nintendo Power could become a future "channel" on the Nintendo Wii, while their print magazine is offloaded to a third-party team. This may be synonymous with the death of Nintendo Power as we know it, while it gets yet another make-over.

Or, perhaps the layoffs are another re-design of the magazine requiring new personal to arrive and change the mood of the print form media. However, with other magazines starting to fall under some of the news intensive websites, this might just be a sign of the times.

If you've purchased a Wii you've probably been told you'll get three free issues of Nintendo Power if you register the console. They will then hand you a hefty discount off the cover price to sign up. Marketing tactic to try and recover some lost audience?
