What... The.... Fuck?

Ok, feeling a bit overwhelmed today at work.

For those of you who didn't know, I work for a major telecommunications company who shall remain unnamed. I design dedicated data circuits for this company between cities. A lot of what I do, is project management. When my company cannot support a circuit order on our own network, I go out and lease capacity from other companies to support the order.

Then I have to choose the best price, negotiate the price, choose the best vendor, etc... Once I've chosen a vendor, that's where the project managing comes into play. I have to work with the vendor, the Local Bell, the Customer, my company, and sometimes an extra company (for cross-lata circuits (don't ask)). I take the pieces from each of these parties, design the circuit, and then make sure the connections are made properly between each and every party.

i.e. - Circuit originates with the customer in City A. From there, the circuit passes off to an interconnect provider who then passes it to my company. Then, I may have to pass it off to another interconnect company who takes it to the vendor. This is all in the same city. Then the vendor takes the circuit to City B. From there, they pass the circuit off to a loop provider who in turn takes the circuit out to the customer. I have to make sure that the connections are made properly at each hand-off. Ensuring that these connections are being made requires me to deal with all these parties involved... Coordinating wiring, scheduling testing, etc...

Now, normally, I typically only work with DS3 level circuits. A DS3 = 28 T1s. A T1 = 1.5 Mbps up and down. A DS3 = 45 Mbps. I'll also order a few occasional OC-3 (OC3 = 3 DS3s). OCN circuits typically take longer to design and manage due to the capacity restraints and they they are on a fiber optic level which requires specific fiber optic equipment.

This is where my WTF for today comes in.

I got (2) orders for OC-12s (12 DS3s) a couple of weeks ago. No big deal, I've worked a few of these. Then, I got (2) more orders last week. Hrmmm... Then, (2) more orders this week. Ok... (6) OC-12s. That'll make life interesting. I stop by my boss's office to discuss another order, and he informs me that I have even more OC-12s coming my way.

WTF? (EIGHTEEN) OC-12s total to be exact. WTF!?!? That is equivalent to 216 DS3s. I haven't worked 216 DS3s TOTAL, in the past 3 years. 216 DS3s. That equals = 9.7gig (appx.) in bandwidth.

This is of course, in addition to my current workload which includes 30+ DS3s and 3-4 OC-3s.

This isn't going to be fun.

Job security? Yeah.

Job suckage? Definitely.

Sounds like Google is coming to town. Or the NSA. Or some backbone company has seen the light in the tunnel and decided they don't want that train to hit home, so they are increasing the backbone capactiy (yeah, fantasy). Just be glad you've got a fairly secure and well paying job.

And yet you still managed to squeeze out some time to blog to fill us in on how little time you have - impressive :)

Lol... that's the darndest thing isn't it? I somehow still find time to bitch and moan about it on my blog!\r \r Must have something to do with the fact that I've been doing this same job for over 7 years now, and could probably do it in my sleep!\r \r It isn't the work that sucks. It's dealing with the idiots who think they know what they are doing, when they don't (Sales Reps) and dealing with the local phone companies... (Assholes, all of them), and with a customer who was given a timeline that isn't reasonable, but fails to understand that.\r \r Nah, it isn't the work. It's the assholes of the world.
