What Motivates Us?

So, I am sitting at my desk at work, dealing with issues on an almost nonstop basis. During the morning today a question entered my train of though: What motivates people when it comes to their chosen profession? The answer seems simple to many, and the majority answer is more often that not money. But, I wonder, if a person is not motivated by money, then what.

For me, it is the thrill of the challenge. I work in an environment where most of us are grossly underpaid, but we stay. So it can’t be the money. I really enjoy taking on a project that looks like it has no way to be completed successfully. The satisfaction of solving those problems brings about feelings of extreme pride and satisfaction for me. The reason this thought occurred to me this morning is probably due to the fact that I recently took on a new project, and it seems more hopeless then any I have tried in the past. I can’t wait to successfully finish it.

What about you guys, assuming anyone will actually read this, what motivates you at work?

I'd have to go with projects that are challenging, that vary from one to the next, and where I get the opportunity to learn and work with good people.

I've had lots of different types of jobs, from construction to medical to being a Pastor, and the motivation was different for each one.\r \r I like to feel that I'm doing some good for the commnity, or helping people in some meaningful way. That's the biggest problem with my current job. No satisfaction whatsoever.

Enjoyment, I love what I do. I was fortunate to discover at an early age in high school that I loved the printing industry. Ever since then I knew I wanted to be in printing all my life and I have been doing it for the last 22 years.\r \r

I'm motivated by my customers. The only reason I come into this craphole called work is my commitment to not screwing some very cool people.

Growth. I love adding new features and solving new problems when they arise. Its like I'm adding pieces to a puzzle and watching it grow and take form. I guess if that ever stops, or people's enjoyments stops, then I will have to move on to something else.

I like going to my retail because I like what I sell. It's cool to educate customers about certain products and see the light go on, watching them understand. \r \r For my painting job, I like going to it because it's different every day and it's the complete opposite of the corporate world. Nice to get away from all the procedure and bullshit.
