The Town Drunk
I live and grew up in the same small town. When we were kids, we would often reference the town drunk. He was a valued part of conversation from taunts to lore. He drank aftershave, you know?
The town drunk seems a quaint ideal now in the age of crack and meth. Sure he was disheviled, and of course, a drunk, but he worked odd jobs, and never hurt anyone.
It seems strange how this epitome of disgrace would hardly merit notice now.
A buddy of mine and I were just talking about him thirty years ( I suppose) after his death. We commented there was a certain honor to him now in retrospect.
Here's to you, Rob.

Good Point about the difference in what was disgraceful then and now.
Reminds me of the guy from the Andy Griffith Show... he knew where the keys to the jail was and locked himself up when he was too drunk.\r

These days I have a woman who isn't homeless but an alcoholic coming into my store and drinking half of the one-liters of mouthwash.\r

She will not be talked of fondly in the future.
