I guess the election of President Obama hasn't really done much for race relations after all.


Quoting from U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush - D IL


"While they might not be termed racist, their action is racist," Rush told FOX News. "I think that if Roland Burris hadn't been an African American, then he would have been allowed to accept the appointment and become a senator."


Way to play the card.  If Mr. Rush really thinks that the only reason Burris was turned away due solely to his race, he's not intelligent enough to retain his office and the people of IL should consider impeaching him as well.


 


Now, that being said.  I don't think the Senate has a legal right to turn this guy away.  It's unfortunate that he was appointed by yet another Chicago machine political crook but at the moment Gov. Blago...whatever is the acting governor and he's within his right to appoint, sign legislation and so forth.  If the people of IL or the state legislative body or the US Congress doesn't like it, then they'll need to go back and change the law to prevent it from happening again.  As it is, Mr. Burris should be seated.  In the future maybe a law that disqualifies a Governor from making appointments while under Federal indictment can be crafted.  I'm just more shocked/angered about Mr. Rush going all 1968 on a situation that clearly has nothing to do with race.

I'm not sure the Senate can accept his appointment. From my understanding without the signatures of the Governor and the Secretary of State of Illinois it is not a legal appointment.\r \r It's times like these I love being a Democrat. We are so effing bad at politics it's always a wonder to me that we get anyone elected. The \"press conference\" with Burris looked like it was written by Republicans it was so harmful to everyone involved. Nobody eats their own young like the Democratic Party!

Didn't know that bit of legalese Bubba, thanks.\r \r I think the basic point remains though, if the Gov. has the right and authority under current law to appoint, then whomever along the way that does the approving should vet the guy legitimately as they would anyone else.

When there is no answer...play the race card. Mr Burris is juat as qualified as any other considered for the seat. I don't think anyone debated about wether he was black or not but now Rush is using it as an excuse because there is no other explanation. In all honesty Burris knew this was coming, how could he not? The Senate dems even said that they would not seat any appointee from Blogo so why even bother accepting? This has everything to do with our crooked(alleged, but we all know he's a fuckin nut case) governor and absolutely nothing to do with Burris as a person or as a possible senatorial candidate. Burris is a fool though, he should not have accepted the appointment. Now he's going to waste countless taxpayer $$ on a personal legal mission to prove a point although I don't know what that point is other than he's a fool for accepting the appointment.

I had read somewhere that Blago appointed Burris in order to create precisely this situation. But who knows?

It seems to me the reason the Secretary of State's signature is required is PRECISELY THIS SITUATION. Why would it be required if it was merely a formality? Maybe it's a check & balance of the governor's power.

I think it's absurd that anyone is pulling the race card on this issue. It's also absurd that this senate seat was effective put on ebay as far as the Gov. Gabbovovicialsvhclat was concerned. \r \r Even of more absurdity is that I bid 2 bucks to get that seat and still lost.

The Democrat strategist on one of the news stations called the appointment a \"genius move on the Governor part\". Why? \"Because takes attention away from him and his corruption charges and puts it fully on the ineptness of the Democratic party to manage a situation like this. Couple that with the fact that the candidate is an African American and he has created quite a powderkeg.\"\r \r I am paraphrasing the \"quotes\" but that was the jist of the comments. The positive news is that finally the Dems and Reps are agreeing on something! :lol:

I am sure Burris took the nomination because (1) if he was not seated, he'd become an instant national celebrity and get to be on TV and do interviews and act all indignant and whatnot, and (2) if he WAS seated, he'd be a freaking Senator.\r \r If you're an attention hound or power hungry, this situation was a free buffet. I can totally see why he accepted the nomination. I can't respect it, but I can understand it.

At least Burris has shown some class. He hasn't played the race card, even though he is the one who was embarrassed and denied the seat. He also said the for his entire career race has never been an issue.
