I interview people where I work, I'm a hard ass interviewer; I go in to break you, to find out if you're lying and to invoke fear into you.\r \r It's all a show. It's to feel you out and know what you're really made of. For someone to make such a broad assumption about how long you've been out of work means two things to me:\r \r a) The caller doesn't do this much\r b) You don't want to work there\r \r Anywhere you can be judged so quickly over the phone like that is not a healthy proactive environment. You should feel lucky, not snubbed.\r

Oh I know, I do feel lucky that I didn't end up going in there for an interview and having to deal with his idiocy in person...I wouldn't have been nice at all. In no way am I interested in working there at all anymore, but his attitude just got me thinking....what if other people are thinking the same thing about me being out of work. What if that's why I'm not getting anywhere with anyone. \r Hell if I know, but being out of work is really driving me insane!

What Cody misses here is the impact of a phonevoice.\r \r One gets a mental picture of a person they have never seen before by the way that person sounds. You are at a disadvantage as a woman since studies have shown that the female-voice has a good chance of being experienced as annoying, warring, defensive or unpleasant when heard over wired or wireless communications with the exception of television broadcasts. (Where the viewer can put a face to the voice.)\r \r Anyway, I would advise you to be more pro-active. Get a good portrait taken at a profesional photographer (Not uncle Joe-Bob who gets you a red-eye of you standing next to your blue painted walls while you're wearing yellow, just to name something.) and invest in multiple copies of it. Then sit down and make a list of five jobs you want to do and what you know you can do. Order is not important.\r Now all you need to do is to find companies that are sure to have any of your five jobs and sent them an application. Make the actual application hand-written, your CV can be a print-out.\r It's not in anyway important if those companies are actually recruiting, the very fact that you came knocking at their doors puts you in the advantage. (Remember from my blog how I switched jobs in less than a day?)\r In the meantime, get a community-job (Helping the elderly, is there a soup-kitchen who needs volunteers?) and all the while your sending your applications out, keep updating your CV with the C-jobs you've done.\r This shows on your CV that you're not at home feeling sorry for yourself, but that you're actively staying a part of the community. Another bonus is that you'll be building a network of people who will remember you.\r \r Being unemployed is hard-work. In the time I was out of work for a long time, I had far longer days...

Durty, I got a job once that someone more qualified should have got. I found out the reason was...because her shoes didn't look nice and clean!!! People are weird. \r \r I know this is hard, but look into temp work. This is why. You can make your own hours. Work as little or as much as you want. If you can't go in that day, fine, tell them so. Here's why this can help you when interviewing. When an interviewer ask \"are you employed?\", you can say, yes!. Temp work is better than no work. Again, you don't have to work a lot, just put a little time in here and there. Most temp jobs can give a reference for you. It's something to try.

I have worried about the same thing, are people staying away from me because I have been out of work for so long, thinking there is something wrong with me? fucktards. I bet that asshole does his work the same way... phoning it in.

I agree with cryptic cat for the most part: excpet you have to get tougher. Network, cold calls and set up information meetings. Wehn I was unemploeyed it was a full time job. Calling people, getting names, setting up meetings. I did about 20 meetings before I found my job that really did it fofr me.\r \r Also: temp agency. It can open doors for you big time.
