* - A note about the above picture.  That is First Sergeant Brad Kasal (Now Sergeant Major).  SgtMajor Kasal went into a house where there wounded Marines to pull them out.  Insurgents were on the 2nd floor firing down on the Marines.

When Sgt.Major Kasal entered into the building, he was immediately hit by AK-47 fire.  He dropped down next to another wounded Marine, and returned fire.  The insurgents dropped a grenade down less then 4 feet from SgtMajor Kasal, and he rolled over and put his body on top of the other Marine to protect him.  The grenade exploded, and Sgt. Major Kasal was hit with over 40 pieces of shrapnel.

He continued to return fire, and was hit with more AK-47 fire.  When the Marines finally were able to pull him (above) and the other Marines out, he had been hit with 7 AK-47 rounds, tearing apart his legs, and 40+ pieces of sharpnel.  He had lost over 60% of his blood by the time they got him to a medic. 

Sgt. Major Kasal continued to fight and to provide aid to injured Marines all the while he was bleeding severely and holding onto consciousness.

For his actions, Sgt. Major Kasal was awarded the Navy Cross, the 2nd highest medal awarded for bravery.

This man is the epitome of a Marine.
