Need some advice

Hey all,

I need some advice from anyone who does web design work.  I have had a few people interested in having some small websites built.  They are looking for 3 - 5 page sites mainly for informational purposes.  It won't require any flash (which I don't know yet but am working on it), or databases.  I am capable of doing these, however, I've never done a site for anyone besides myself before.  My question is what should one charge for this service.  My thought is somewhere between $200 - $300.  I've seen other companies charging this but I'm not sure if I can ask for that?  Maybe it's just a bit of self doubt, but honestly I just don't know why more people don't do these themselves.  What they are asking for could be accomplished easily enough with a template and a few cut and pastes I'm sure.  Now I'll do a better job than that of course but it just amazes me what people are willing to pay for.  Then again I'm sure my mechanic says the same thing whenever I bring my car in.

Anywho...anyone who does websites for a living let me know what the going rate is these days.  Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.  As I am not able to find full time employment, and will most likely make less money than before once I do find a job, I am going to need some extra income.

Later...

charge by the hour not the project, websites creation tends to get into a lot of change orders and feature creep.\r

That's what my friend told me last night. Seems like good advice.

Ping me if you still need a price. My guy does this work and might be able to give you a ballpark

When I did this kind of stuff, I'd start out at $1,000 for up to five pages, then give a \"friend\" discount of 25%. That way you'll see if they are serious. Any follow-up web maintenance, I'd charge $35 an hour and up. These prices were way under the commercial guys locally, but I didn't do databases or e-commerce.

@Saithme did you design your own templates too?

Yes, using Dreamweaver and Photoshop for the graphics.
