Mommy Dearest

Several things in entertainment news have gotten me thinking about what it takes to be a mom.  Halle Berry is pregnant.  Paris Hilton is "preparing her body for a child".  Britney Spears seems in denial that she is a mom.  We all get frusterated by the boundries of being a parent.  My circle of friends is limited because I have kids.  My employment opppurtunities are limited because I have kids.  My body is changed because I have kids.  But it is all worth it, every little bit.  I don't understand celebrity moms sometimes because I don't see how they are able to have such large lives outside of their kids.

I wonder if celebraties have a similar daily routine to mine.  Everything that I do revolves around my children.  I wonder if the inclusion of nannies and housekeepers affects their relationship with their children.  I look at awesome celebrity moms like Jada Pinkett-Smith, who takes a very large role with her children, and I am impressed that she is "keeping it real".  Then I see moms like Britney Spears and Posh Spice and I feel so bad for those little ones who may never know their mom except for the celebrity persona that they keep up.

In my 6.5 years of being a mom, I have learned so much and I pray that my mistakes will not have a permanent negative impact on my kids.  I am nervous about the upcoming months because my partner in all of this, one of the best Dads on the planet, will be gone for 6 months for his military training.  I know at some point my son will tell me he is having a bad day and eventually will say he misses his Dad.  I know my reaction will be too say I miss Dad too, probably with some tears and hugs.

Kids are so wonderfully unique, I know there is no way to have a 100% foolproof parenting guide.  I thankfully had great parents, but I didn't know how great they were until I was challenged by my own kids.  Being a mom is the best thing that ever happened to me.  Without it, I would have never settled down.  Being a mom has brought back my inner child that I lost when my parents split.  Being a mom has helped me to appreciate MY mom in a way I never saw before I had children.  Being a mom has helped me open my heart and live my life less selfishly.   Being a mom has made me see life with a future beyond my own.

Thanks for reading....WOOT WOOT and WORD.

Well guess you will have to find other mommies to talk to while he is away. Remember he is comming back and maybe there might be time for you to road trip with the kids to see him during these 6 months.

I love being a Dad, even though my newborn and toddler are physically and mentally draining me.

Parenting is simultaneously the most wonderful and most draining thing in the world. And damn, kids grow up fast. I know it's a cliche, but you truly have to treasure every moment because before you know it, they'll be all grown up.

Yeah, being parents now for 7 years has brought about many changes in our lives. In fact, I don't think anything has remained the same other than we're still married. They change EVERYTHING!!! :D

I'm not sure what I'd do without my two kids... I remember back to spending money freely on anything I wanted, dual income, staying up late and sleeping until Noon.\r \r Going out to starbucks every Friday night with the wife and friends to drink coffee and joke around... then the kids came.\r \r And, I don't think there is a single thing I'd trade the new life up for (well, maybe a service to change stinky diapers and puke).

Amen, Jeep! And as wonderful as grandkids are, it just isn't the same. You're right about not knowing if you are causing irreparable damage or raising them right until after their gone from the nest. Every day is a challenge and a wonderous thing if you stop and look!

Being a dad is the best thing I have ever done in my life. I am 100% all about the kids 2 and 4 years old and both girls, yeah it hard work...but the rewards...shit, you can't fucking beat it!!!

Okay, I'm \"only\" a step-dad, but in my 6 years in this role (he's almost 9 already) I haven't thought parenting was all that difficult -- because the joy and rewards quickly make you forget all the efforts. Sure, kids frustrate you, get on your nerves, but they also make you laugh, make you smile, make you proud, make you feel that way nobody else can when they keep coming into your office when you're trying to work, just to give you a hug and tell you how much they love you and how much they like it that you're now working from home :)

I just found this. I guess, as usual, I'm late to the party.\r \r The wonder of the intarweb is the saving grace. You can get on a vid chat while he's away. You can talk via cell phone. You can IM from the damn cell phone. Your communication options are very wide, and they can take down so much of the anxiety and worry that you ALL will have. And what kid doesn't think it's bitchin' to see their mommy of daddy on the 'puter, talking to them?\r It will be tough, but take some solace in knowing that even though you may not be close geographically, Daddy's face is only a few clicks and keystrokes away. Get that laptop ready to go, get the webcam and get your accounts set up now.\r When I was travelling constantly, I couldn't get my boy to talk on the phone, but once that webcam came on I couldn't get him to shut up! :D\r I wish I had that when I was in the Corps- I had many-a calls home from crappy pay phones in dubious locations in ports all over the Pacific Rim. And no cell phone- hell, I had to call my recruiter from boot camp to let my parents know that I made it safe and sound because we didn't have an answering machine!\r \r Good luck, and we're here. \r
