I think I want one

It's a Fender Blacktop Stratocaster HSH.  It's a made in Mexico so it isn't top of the line, but definitely a hell of a lot better than the made in China starter guitar I'm learning on.  If I'm still playing everyday and having fun in 3 months, I think I'm going to buy one for myself as a birthday present.  At first I was leaning toward an Epiphone Les Paul Standard, but for the same price I think I'd rather have this one.

Speaking of my Chinese Strat, last night I dropped in a pre-wired pickguard and a new bridge (including a solid steel block).  I still need to adjust the intonation, but the action has improved significantly with the new bridge.  The new pickups and block make it sound way better too, it's much crisper and fuller sounding now.  The cool thing about a cheap guitar is that you aren't afraid to take it apart and fuck it up.  The block is too big for the body and sticks out by 4 or 5 mm so I can't put the tremolo cover back on but I am going to just make a rubber gasket to give it the extra clearance (either that or just leave it off).

Not sure what your price range is, but you might want to check out Carvin.com for guitars too. Custom built with tons of options, and their prices beat all the \"big-boy\" manufacturers. I've been playing their basses for 13 years and LOVE them.

I'm looking at the $500 range. I will definitely check them out before I buy anything. Thanks for the heads up.

Dude, you can get a lot more guitar than that for $500. Give me a shout & I can ask a couple of questions & get you pointed in the direction of something that would be the best fit for what you're wanting to do. I'd also suggest actually going to your local guitar shop & playing some different stuff. There's a lot more to it than a guitar looking cool.

Sounds good Cotter. I'll be going around and playing a bunch of stuff before I spend any money. What caught my eye about this one was the humbuckers mixed with the single coil. I thought it might be like getting the best of both worlds.

I had a MIM strat. 2005 standard. Absolutely loved it. But I still ALWAYS wanted a Les Paul. So much better sounding IMO.\r \r BUUUUTTT...I don't play anymore and have taken up shooting instead. :)

I agree with jcotter, for $500, you can get a better guitar, I think. Definitely try out different models to find what you like the best and what sounds like what you want. I tend to prefer Ibanez guitars with the Wizard necks because they're so thin and easy to play on. You may even want to develop your abilities a lot more on that starter you have before deciding to upgrade.
