Get Over It.
Get over it.
Halo 2 is gone. Get over it.
The argument raging in the H3 forums was sad and pathetic on both sides.
Caesar makes a post about "possible" button glitches in H3. What happens? He's ganged up on and the "Competitive" players are branded as cheaters because they used button combos and played customs by MLG rules in Halo 2. So the "Competitive" players feel the need to defend themselves.
I recognized that button combos were considered illegal by Bungie in MM fairly early on in that thread. But, what we do in our own custom games, Bungie has no dominion over. My custom game, my rules.
In that way, how is it that when MLG sanctions button combos in their tourneys, is it cheating? It's allowed by the rules. So how is playing within their rules, is it cheating? Don't they run the tournaments? Don't they buy the equipment, pay for the venue, etc... I don't see Bungie contributing anything at all to MLG other than the game, or, competitive gaming for that matter, so I don't understand why people feel Bungie should have a say in how other companies run their own tournaments.
The "Play the Game as its Creator's intended" argument is weak. Games evolve people. I'm not saying that button glitches are legit. Not in MM they aren't. But per MLG rules, at MLG tournaments or MLG custom games, they are allowed.
Games evolve. If we followed the above argument, let's apply it to other professional sports since everyone wants to compare MLG to the NBA, NFL, and MLB. I guess we should still be shooting basketballs into peach baskets and getting the ball down with a ladder. The forward pass would be against the rules still in the NFL. The "fumblerooski" would still be allowed in college football. Players would still be shooting underhanded in the NBA. etc... Those are just examples as to how those games were intended to be played by their creators.
But, they evolved.
There would be no Counter-Strike without evolution of Half-Life. Counterstrike was created by players of the game, not by the creators.
There would be no modding for PC games that create awesome new maps and other stuff not intended by the game's creators. Games evolve.
Uniformity? Sorry. Ain't gonna happen. People play games differently. As such, there are different leagues. MLG does not play Halo 2 the same way WSVG plays H2. That's why they are different leagues.
What really got my blood stirring, is that people were talking about button combos in Halo 2, branding people cheaters, and carrying those labels over into Halo 3, when, THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO KNOWN BUTTON COMBOS. Yet, players who used them in H2 are still cheaters even though they don't play H2 anymore.
Halo 2 is dead. Get over it.
The argument that MLG is causing irreparable harm because it allows button combos in their tournaments? Do you really want to go there? Honestly. Button combos cause irreparable harm? I mean, when you have violence non-stop on TV and in the movies, you are worried about button combos.
Every game has it's rules, and so does every competition. MLG sanctions button combos. They allow players to use them. It's within their rules. How is this causing irreparable harm? How is playing by the rules set forth by the people who run the tournament damaging?
Whose responsibility is it to teach their children good sportsmanship and conduct? Last I knew, it was the parents, and not the athlete. And last time I knew, that as long as I played by a tournament's rules and didn't break them, that was good sportsmanship.
If my child played in MLG and then participated in another tournament that didn't allow button combos, guess whose responsibility it is to explain why one tourney allows them, and the other one doesn't. Mine.
What I find really funny, is that for the longest time, Bungie didn't have a stance on Super Jumping. Their official stance was that they were looking into it to determine as to whether it was cheating or not. Fortunately, they finally resolved that issue and decided it was cheating.
MLG has always banned super jumping. Just a funny dichotomy.
Anyways, the arguments are pointless and in my mind over, as I am playing Halo 3, not Halo 2. I know of no button combos or glitches to use, nor, am I actively seeking them out. In my view, button combos are currently extinct in H3.
So I don't understand why this argument started in the first place. I don't understand why people ganged-up on the "Comp" players and called them cheaters, when we are all playing Halo 3 and not Halo 2.
You can still take your shots at MLG however, because they are still playing Halo 2.
But besides that....
Get Over It.
If you want to continue fighting a battle and talking about Halo 2, by all means! But me, I'm playing Halo 3.

Even without pictures, this was a great blog. :)\r

I hear you....I have never been soooo frustrated in the forums. After reading a couple of those posts I wanted to seriously flip out. I have never bad mouthed anyone or got involed in the petty poo flinging. I like to stay friends with everyone but some people make dumb ass posts and it really got me going today. Thanks for the blog soup
I agree with what you saying Soup, except for your stance on doing irreparable harm. That was taken a bit out of context. No one (to my knowledge) said it did irreparable harm to the kids. It was towards making MLG a serious competition.\r

I don't use the combos, but I don't play competitively. I am very competitive (to the point of breaking shit hence why I don't play competitively) so I think if I did have aspirations of one day playing in a MLG tourney, I would probably use them just to try and level the playing field.\r

I do like to compare button combos to the spitball in baseball. It was once legal, then the rules changed. If MLG was to say no more button combos it would kind of be the same thing. But like you say, at this time, it's legal, so in the context of playing MLG or practicing for MLG it is not cheating.
