Fear.
One of my biggest fears happened to me this evening.
A 7-year old boy ran out in front of me while I was driving my car, and I hit him. No warning what-so-ever.
Thankfully, it was in the mall parking lot, and I was only going 5-10 mph.
Thankfully, he wasn't seriously hurt. My car hit him and basically threw him 10 feet away onto his back. Both my wife and child screamed.
The boy is going to be seriously bruised in the morning. He had a red mark on his back starting at the small of his back going all the way up to his shoulders.
The boy basically hopped out of his father's Excursion and ran out (without looking) to the parking lot because he had to go to the bathroom. He never saw me, and I didn't get a chance to see him. Part of the problem, is that he was shorter then the hood of the Excursion.
This is why you constantly remind your children to look both ways when crossing the road.
The father was pissed. But not at me. More at his boy for not looking. Probably mad more from fear then from actual anger.
Called the Police so that the incident was reported in case the boy needed to go to the hospital later on. (God I hope not.)
Needless to say, I'm pretty shook up. This has always been one of my biggest fears. Hitting a kid with my car and severely hurting him or killing him.
Luckily, neither of those happened.
